Notes for Jacob ROSS
Harold Leckey in his grand work, "The Tenmile Country and Its Pioneer
Ancestors" states that Jacob and Abigail moved to Jackson Township and had a
large tract of land there. He was in Morgan Township next to his brother,
William, in the 1820 census. They had acquired their father's land by
purchase and quit-claim deeds from their siblings according to numerous deed
records in Greene County. Leckey also relates the family of Abibail Ross,
the daughter of Timothy Ross of the New Jersey Rosses. He states that some
claimed Jacob Ross and Abigail Ross were related but that others denied it.
I tend to believe that they were in some way related since his father,
John's, farm was next to Henry Ross who seems to be of the New Jersey line.
Further, it is quite possible that the youthful John Ross came to America
having some relatives here, uncles, etc. He would hardly have gotten off the
boat at age 14 or 15 and made his way into this Virginia Wilderness alone.
As noted elsewhere, a descendant of Jacob's brother, William Ross, states
that the immigrant, John Ross, came to America with four brothers from the
Isle of Man.
Robert Ross in his book, "The Ross Family of New Jersey" states that Jacob
lived in Richhill Township and was a farmer and a drover.
Records obtained by Dorothy Hennen of Waynesburg and sent to me by Mary Helen
Emery state that Jacob was the youngest child of John and Mary Elizabeth and
the ony child to remain in Greene County. They settled on a large tract of
land in Jackson Township that had been deeded to Abigail by her father,
Timothy. Nine children were born to this union. In Beers History of
Washington County he states that Abigail lived to be 85 years, 1 month and 13
days of age. Jacob's tombstone in South Tenmile Baptist cemetery,
Graysville, PA gives age as ae 60-2-6.
Jacob's 1820 census shows a household of one male 10-16 years of age, two
16-26; threefemales under 10; one 16-26 and one over 45 (Probably Mary, his
mother)
