Jordan Ragsdale
The Descendants of
Jordan Ragsdale

It seems that Jordan Ragsdale and his brother William just sort of "appeared out of nowhere" in Western Tennessee in the early 1800's. I have studied other established Ragsdale lineages and, as of yet, have found no certain connection. The most I know is that Jordan's father (possibly a John Ragsdale), was born in Virginia, and in the early 1800's lived in either Hickman County or Humphreys County, Tennessee. The 1850 and 1860 census of Tennessee has Jordan and brother William in Obion County, Tennessee, although it is said that in the 1840's the families had lived for a short time in Missouri and/or Indiana.

Jordan was born in Tennessee, circa 1809, and married Lucinda Lancaster, born 6 Jan 1815 in Tennessee (the daughter of William Lancaster and Charlotte Caroline Hamilton).

Lucinda died 25 Jan 1881 in Obion County, Tennessee, and was buried in the Chambers-Holman Cemetery, Obion County, Tennessee. I was there in 1995 and the cemetery, which was extremely hard to find in the first place, was so overgrown I was unable to locate any of the Ragsdale graves.

Jordan died circa Mar 1892, probably in Weakley County, Tennessee, and his burial site is unknown.

Jordan and William may have been sons of John Ragsdale in Hickman County, Tennessee, and had land there before 1820, when he appears on the 1820 census.

Jordan Ragsdale sold some land in Hickman County, Tennessee, on 16 November 1839.

Both Jordan and William's families had children born in Missouri in 1840; may have been there 5 or more years.

According to the 1850 census of Obion County, Tennessee, Jordan Ragsdale was employed as a farmer.

Jordan's will is on file in the Court House in Weakley County, Tennessee.
