ANALYSIS AND CONCLUSIONS
From Amelia County tithable lists and deeds, John Hampton Sr. is known to have lived with Mary (his wife), John Hampton Jr., Micajah Hampton, and Collins Hampton. Based on their living with John Sr., John Jr., Micajah, and Collins are presumed to be his sons. If true, then they were each approximately 16 years of age the first time they appeared on a tithable list with John Sr. (white males became tithable at 16 years of age according to Carol McGinnis, VIRGINIA GENEALOGY, SOURCES AND RESOURCES, Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore, 1993, p. 80). That means that John Jr. was probably born sometime around 1730, Micajah was probably born sometime around 1737, and Collins was probably born sometime between 1741 and 1746. Collins was one of the witnesses to the purchase of 100 acres by John Hampton Sr. in Halifax County in 1767. Also based on the tithable lists, John Sr. was likely at least 60 in 1762, the first year in the timeline in which he was not a tithable (there does not appear to have been any set age when people were dropped from the tithables list, so this is a guess).
From the Amelia County tithable lists, John Sr. is known to have lived close to Nathaniel Hampton, as well. Nathaniel may be a son, brother, or cousin. It is likely that Nathaniel was a son. Nathaniel's living children as of 23 Feb. 1764 included John Hampton, Elkanah Hampton, Roda Hampton, and Judy Hampton. Elkanah Hampton wrote a noncupative will on 29 May 1776 (probated on 18 June 1778) in which he leaves everything to his sister, Judith, who was living on Childer Creek in Halifax at the time that the letter was written. This would appear to be the same creek upon which John Hampton Sr. bought land in 1767.
No other adult male Hamptons are known to have lived in Amelia County at the time that the "family" of John Hampton Sr. was resident. In additoin to Mary Hampton, the wife of John Sr., there were several other adult female Hamptons in the county during that time, however. How they relate to John Sr. is unknown. At least two lived in Nottoway Parish at the same time as John Sr., so they are likely his relatives. The females are
(1) Rachel Hampton
(2) Lea Hampton and her illegitimate children, Lewis, Ann, and John Hampton of Nottoway Parish
(3) Phoebe Hampton and sons James and John Forrest Hampton of Nottoway Parish
Due to an apparent relationship between the Hamptons and the Collins, it is possible that Mary, wife of John, was a Collins.
One possible family tree for the Hamptons of Amelia County is as follows:
1.John Hampton Sr. (bef 1702-) & Mary ??? (Collins?)
2.John Hampton Jr. (c1730-)
2.Nathaniel Hampton (c1733-) & ???
3.John Hampton (before 1764-after 1776)
3.Elkanah Hampton (before 1764-c1778)
3.Roda Hampton (before 1764-)
3.Judy Hampton (before 1764-after 1778)
2.Micajah Hampton (1737-)
2.Collins Hampton (1741/1746-)
2.Lea Hampton
3.Lewis Hampton (before 1762-)
3.Ann Hampton (before 1762-)
3.John Hampton (before 1762-)
2.Phoebe Hampton
3.James Hampton (before 1762-)
3.John Forrest Hampton (c.1763-)
It should be noted that (1) Nathaniel Hampton may not be a son of John Sr., (2) Mary, wife of John Sr., may be the mother of only some or even none of the children identified in the family tree, and (3) Lea and Phoebe may be children of an entirely different Hampton family. Rachel Hampton, who was dead by 1744, may have been a prior wife of John Sr., some other relative, or no relative at all.
Given that none of the children of Lea and Phoebe are known to have followed John Sr. to Halifax County, along with Lea and Phoebe's uncharacteristic promiscuity for Virginia in the mid-1700s, especially if they had living parents, an argument could be made for the following alternative family tree:
1.John Hampton Sr. (bef 1702-) & Mary ??? (Collins?)
2.John Hampton Jr. (c1730-)
2.Nathaniel Hampton (c1733-c1764) & ???
3.John Hampton (before 1764-after 1776)
3.Elkanah Hampton (before 1764-c1778)
3.Roda Hampton (before 1764-)
3.Judy Hampton (before 1764-after 1778)
2.Micajah Hampton (1737-)
2.Collins Hampton (1741/1746-)
1. ??? Hampton (-bef 1744) & Rachel ??? (-c1744)
2.Lea Hampton
3.Lewis Hampton (before 1762-)
3.Ann Hampton (before 1762-)
3.John Hampton (before 1762-)
2.Phoebe Hampton
3.James Hampton (before 1762-)
3.John Forrest Hampton (c.1763-)
The unknown Hampton may have been a relative of John.
In 1769, John Sr. and Mary had to be supported by Antrim parish. That plus the fact that John Sr. worked as a slave overseer in the early years in Amelia County plus his general lack of slaves throughout most of his known life indicates that his family was not particularly prosperous.
