A vibrant Swedish community formed in Aroostook County in northern Maine in
the late 1800s and early 1900s. The paternal line in this
ancestry came from Sweden to join this community in May 1911. The
maternal line made the move prior to that.
The founder of the Espling line
of this ancestry moved his family from the south
to the north of Sweden (i.e., from Lerb�ck in �rebro county to Kengis and Selets bruk in Norbotten county) in 1785 so that
he could work as
a specialist in the north's iron works. He is said to have been a Walloon descendant.
Curiously, the founder of the Olander line that figures prominently in this ancestry
used the Eriksson surname in Sweden.
That name was a patrymonic. That is, the founder of the Olander line
was literally Erik's son. His sons were called Olofsson. The family story is that Olander
was selected as the new family surname because the founder of the line felt that
there were just too many
Erikssons.
