The Zebe Family of Kreis Grottkau,
Schlesien (Silesia)
Compiled by Paul Zebe

Introduction
|
The Zebe family of Kreis Grottkau was founded by Franz Zebe
and his wife Francisca (nee Klose). While it is known that Franz
was born in Würben, Kreis Grottkau, and that Francisca was
born in Niklasdorf, Kreis Grottkau, the parents of neither are
known. Franz was born in 1805. By the mid-1830s he was a
shephard living in Zülzhof, Kreis Grottkau, perhaps on the
estate located there. By the 1840s, he was a property owner in
Olbendorf, Kreis Strehlen (for more about this village, see
"Memories of Olbendorf"). At the
time of his death he was the owner of a full sized farm [a
Bauerngutsbesitzer] in the village. Franz and Francisca
had three sons and a daughter. All three sons left Schlesien to
work elsewhere in Germany, one returning after retirement and the
end of World War I, but not to Kreis Grottkau nor to Kreis
Strehlen. The daughter and her descendants operated the family
farm until the Germans were expelled from Schlesien at the end of
World War II. Today, the descendants of Franz and Francisca live
in Germany and the USA.
While the ancestors of Franz Zebe are unknown, it is known
that from the 1680s to the 1760s Zebes were living first in the
village of Hönigsdorf (from c1683 and perhaps earlier to
c1740) and then in the village of Striegendorf (from c1740 into
the 1760s, and perhaps later), both in Kreis Grottkau and both
within a mile or two of Würben, Franz's birthplace (in
places, fields of Würben border fields of Striegendorf).
Circumstantial evidence suggests that prior to 1683, the Zebe
family may have used the surname Zewige (and its shortened form,
Zewe). If so, they were resident in Hönigsdorf from at least
the late 1650s. It might be noted that the American Zebe family
has a tradition that the family underwent a surname change at
some point in its history, but their German cousins do not.
I would be very interested in hearing from anyone who is
descended from this family.

Other Zebe
Families
|
There appear to be a number of different Zebe families located
throughout the world, including Germany and the USA. In the USA,
there are at least two different Zebe families, and likely three
or more. The relationship, if any, between the Zebe family of
KreisGrottkau and any other Zebe family is currently unknown.
The Zebe families include the following:
Pitschen, Kreis Kreuzburg, Schlesien--A Zebe family
originating in Pitschen, Kreis Kreuzburg, lived in Schlesien from
at least the late 1600s up to the end of World War II.
Descendants of this family can be found throughout Germany today,
as well as in the USA. The family was Protestant and a number of
descendants were Protestant clergy. The noted Schlesien writer,
Gustav Freytag, is a descendant of this family. The surname of
this family may have originally been Ceba (or variant).
Ost-Brandenburg--A Zebe family currently living in
Germany originated in Ost-Brandenburg. Ost-Brandenburg is that
portion of Brandenburg that was absorbed by Poland after the end
of World War II.
Southwestern Germany--A Zebe family has lived in
Baden-Württemburg evidently for centuries. The origins of
this family are unknown. Some members of the family apparently
moved to East/West Prussia during the 1700s. The family surname
is said to be a variant of the surname Zehe.
Slovenia--A Zebe family currently living in Germany
originated in what is now Slovenia. The family home was
originally Marburg/Drau (now Maribor/Drava). The surname of this
family was originally Cebe and was reportedly changed because
Germans habitually mispronounced it.
Huguenots--A Zebe family currently living in Germany is
descended from Huguenots who came to Germany from France. It is
reported that the famly surname was written as Zebé by
some members of the family until World War II.
