Introduction
|
Joseph FREITAG is the founder of the FREITAG family of Rogau, Kreis Grottkau, Schlesien (Silesia). Rogau was a small village located in the Catholic parish of Kühschmalz, Kreis Grottkau.
Only two references to Joseph by name have been found in the written record. The first reference to Joseph by name is in a February 1829 baptism record where his foster daughter, Auguste FREITAG, was identified as the godmother of a child. That baptism occurred at the Catholic Church at Kühschmalz, Kreis Grottkau. Joseph is identified as a Jäger [hunter] in Rogau, Kreis Grottkau. The second reference to Joseph by name appears in the marriage records of the Catholic Church at Gläsendorf, Kreis Grottkau. That record, presumably created in January 1830, is for the marriage of his son, Carl, to Amalie WEINITSCHKE. Joseph is identified as the lead hunter [Revierjäger] in Rogau.
Joseph and his unknown wife are believed to have had at least two children: Caroline who married Franz GALLE, and Carl (my ancestor). In addition, Elisabeth FREITAG, wife of Thomas PRESCHER, master tailor in Hönigsdorf, may have been another child of Joseph. Beginning prior to her marriage, Caroline was the godparent of many of the children of Elisabeth and Thomas. Her husband, Franz, and her brother, Carl, were godparents of additional children of Elisabeth and Thomas. Elisabeth is known to have been the godparent of at least one of the children of Caroline and Franz.

Franz FREITAG and
his wife Johanna NEUGEBAUER
|
Franz FREITAG and his wife Johanna NEUGEBAUER also lived in Rogau. Franz and Johanna are first mentioned in the churchbooks of Kühschmalz in 1810, when Johanna appeared as a godparent. At that time, Franz was identified as a free agricultural laborer [Einlieger]. By 1814, he had become the lead hunter [Revierjäger] at Rogau. How this couple is related to Joseph FREITAG is not known for certain, but it is highly likely that Franz was one of Joseph's siblings.
Franz and Johanna had one known child: Franz Peter FREITAG. Franz was probably born in 1814 in the Catholic parish of Kühschmalz, Kreis Grottkau. He was baptized on 28 February 1814 at the Catholic Church in Kühschmalz. He first married Caroline BLASCHKE. Franz and Caroline had the following two children: (1) Loise FREITAG -- born on 15 January 1834 in Ober Kühschmalz and (2) Caroline Anna Rosalia FREITAG -- born on 9 July 1836 in Ober Kühschmalz. He second married Helene BLASCHKE. The couple had the following three children: (1) August FREITAG -- born on 20 March 1838 in Ober Kühschmalz, (2) Anna FREITAG -- born on 5 February 1840 in Ober Kühschmalz, and (3) Mathilde FREITAG -- born on 31 October 1841 in Ober Kühschmalz.

An Interesting
Coincidence
|
On 9 February 1862, my ancestors, Ida Freitag and Franz Joseph
Zebe were married at the Catholic Church at Kühschmalz,
Kreis Grottkau. This was not the first Freitag-Zebe marriage in
Schlesien (Silesia). On 20 June 1815, Dr. Freitag of Creuzburg
married Henriette Zebe of Wüstebriese. A product of this
union was the Silesian writer, Gustav Freytag (the "y" is said to
have been considered "classier" than the "i" in mid-19th Century
"Germany," which is the likely explanation of the spelling
change). It is unknown if Dr. Freitag was related to the Freitag
family of Rogau, although, given the religious differences (Dr.
Freitag was a Protestant), it is highly unlikely. Henriette Zebe
is a descendant of the Zebe family of Pitschen, Kreis Creutzburg,
Schlesien. Despite sharing an uncommon surname and a Silesian
origin, the Pitschen Zebes and the Grottkau Zebes are not
related.
