William was born on July 25, 1926, the son of Steven Haywood Pridgen and Hazel Dawes Pridgen. He grew up on a small tobacco farm and attended Coopers School in the Sandy Cross Community near Rocky Mount. He had many fond memories of his youth and maintained friendships with people that lasted throughout his lifetime. During World War II, William was assigned to the U.S.S. Weiss where he proudly served his country. After military service, he returned to Rocky Mount and worked as a car salesman for several dealerships including Dixie Auto Sales, Alan Mims Ford, and Crest Ford. William was a born salesman and blessed with the gift of gab. He never met a stranger and always had a joke or funny story to share. After his retirement in 1987 he began riding a bicycle for his health and continued to ride regularly until recently. He often rode 15 miles a day and eventually chalked up over 49,000 miles total. The Rocky Mount Telegram published a story about his life and his love of bicycling in January 2005. William treasured the friendships with his neighbors in the Englewood subdivision and enjoyed working in his vegetable garden. He was a generous man with a big heart and will be missed by many. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 56 years, Sadie Alford Pridgen; his son, Billy Pridgen and wife, Donna of Cary; brother, Marshall Pridgen and wife, Mary Frances; brother-in-law, Lawrence Alford and wife, Lucille; and many nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held from 6:00 – 8:00 pm on Saturday, August 23, 2008 at Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday, August 24, 2008 at Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home. A private burial will be held at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. The family would like to especially thank Dr. Linda Hawes, whose compassionate and expert care allowed William to live an active and happy life until cancer finally claimed him.
