Within the next few years sons Joseph, David and Michael joined them in Gallia Co. OH. I feel fairly sure one of this bunch is your Mr. Entsminger. - Ginny in WY." The first Replogle to be found at

Story: __ ___ ____ An assumption is made, based on name, location, and relatives in the same

locations, that Balzer Replogle (ID is 12 in 1984 Gen.) and Johann Balthasar

Reblogel (ID is UA-3.2 in 1984 Gen.) are one and the same person. The

following notes are from the 1984 Gen., p. xxiv: "Johann Balthasar Reblogel

(UA-3.2), baptised Dec 24 1722. "Our 12 Balzer Replogle (Reblogel) could be

this man. He also could be a son of 11 John Rinehart Replogle. John Rinehart

and Balzer lived in the same location in Frederick Co MD and York Co PA, same

time period in Frederick Co MD. Balzer lived in Littlestown (York Co, now

Adams Co), PA as did John Rinehart. Balzer, however, lived there 20 years

later than John Rinehart."

Before 1779: "The deeds of York Co., PA record a deed to Balzer Replogle and

says he is of Frederick Co., MD." "Record of deed in York Co. PA to property

in Frederick Co. MD stating he is 'of Frederick Co MD.'"

1779: "Our earliest primary source record of 12 Balzer is 1779, a tax

assessment record at Germany Twp (York Co) PA."

1781: Balzer was a private, Germany Twp., York Co., PA militia,

Revolutionary War. "Member, militia, York Co., PA; Soldier, a private; member

of the fifth class of Germany Twp., York Co., PA, as of Jan., 1781."

"A member of the fifth class of Germany Twp., York Co., undated but during

the Revolution. He was assessed seven shillings, four pence toward a bounty to

be paid to a man who would enlist in the Continental Army for the

Revolutionary War."

1777-1782: From PA archives, 3rd series, vol. XXI, assessments in Germany.

Township, York Co., PA:

Page 106, Reblogel, Balzer, 7 acres, 1 cattle, year 1777;

Page 309, Rabfogel, Balzer, 7 1/2 acres, 1 cattle, year 1780;

Page 454, Replogel, Balzer, 2 cattle, year 1781;

Page 559, Riblogle, Balzer, Taxed 1.18.9, year 1782.

1782: In the York Co., PA Land Records Book 2B, p. 183, is a copy of a deed

dated 25 Oct 1782, recorded 26 Mar 1783, showing that Andrew Kunts sold land

to Balzer Replogle of Frederick Co., MD, land in York Co., PA, 7 1/2 acres

called 'Discovery.'

"...Baltzer Riblogle of Frederick County, MD, yeoman, bought seven and a

half acres of land in Germany Township, York (now Adams) County, PA for one

hundred thirty pounds. This land was bought from Andrew Kuntz (a variant of

Coons?), blacksmith of Petersburg (now Littlestown), York (now Adams) Co, PA.

"(NOTE: It has been our experience that many people living in MD along the

PA-MD border often came to York County to church, and also owned property on

both sides of the border, also went to court for legal work in a state

different from the one in which they lived, so this is not too surprising that

Baltzer Replogle was living in MD.

"We have not been able to tie in Baltzer Replogle with Reinhardt Replogle of

York Co, nor have we found information concerning other members of the family

of Baltzer Replogle. We have not been able to find definite proof of

Revolutionary War service of Baltzer Replogle. The data we have shown (based

on Henry James Young's unpublished book, pp 178 and 181) does not prove that

this man actually performed military or patriotic service during the

Revolution."- In letter from Landon Chas. Reisinger, Librarian, The Historical

Society of York Co PA, 2 Jul 1981.

1788: Dau Hannah b 15 May 1788 at Littlestown, Union Twp, Adams Co PA.

Reformed Church Records of York & Adams Counties, PA, "Hanna Replogle b. 15

May 1788, chr. 18 Jan 1789, parents Balthaser and Barbara Replogle, sponsor

Elizabeth Schilyn, single."

Records of Conewago Church, Littleton, Adams Co., PA (for birth of Hannah).

"Replogle Vital Statistic Card file, Historical Society of York Co PA. Hanna

Reblogel b. 15 May 1788, cr. 18 Jan 1789, dau/ Balthaser & Barbara, Sponser,

Elisabeth Schily(in), single, Christ Reformed Church, Littlestown, Union Twp.,

Adams Co. (PA). (Your source gave Conewago Church, which I believe to be an

error."-Letter, Patricia J. Bryan, 16 Nov 1981.

1789: Dau Hannah chr 18 Jan 1789 at Littlestown, Union Twp, Adams Co PA. On

the 1789 christening record of Balzer's daughter Hannah, his name is given as

Balthasar Reblogel.

1796: "(Balser) first appears in the tax records of Rockbridge Co in 1796 --

he possibly could have lived there a few years before tax payment was

required." - Fay L. Mays, 5 Mar 1974.

1800: "Moved from PA thru MD and settled near Lexington, Rockbridge Co.,

VA...First deed Apr. 1, 1800."

"Bought land from a Mr. Entsminger in 1800 at Rockbridge Co., VA. The land

had been patented to the Entsmingers. The first Replogle to be found at

Rockbridge Co., VA, probably Balzer, located at the House Mountain Section."

Also res at Short Hill Section according to Kangas, 1975.

1809-1810: Balzer died between 21 Nov 1809 (will written) and 4 Feb 1810

(will proven).

Balser Replogle's will is dated Nov. 1, 1809 when he was apparently an old

man, for the will mentioned him as being weak in body but perfect in mind.

Local history states that his wife's name was Barbara.

Jacob was probably his oldest son. Jacob and John are named executors in

Balser's will of 1809, so must have been over 21.

"If 12 Balzer is UA-3.2 Johann Balthasar, he was aged 87 when he wrote his

will in 1809 and about 60 when his second known child (Jacob 122) was born in

1782 in Maryland. (We have no record to support a birth date of his first

child Elizabeth 121.) It appears that Balzer may have been considerably older

than his wife. He died between 1809-1810, and she died between 1830-1833

between ages 70-80." - RRG 1984, p. xxiv.

1820: VA census index, 1820, RCK, p 294A, Barbary Riplogal (probably widow

of Balzer Replogle). Jacob Riplogal, probably son of Balzer, is also listed.

1831-1836: "Evidently Rockbridge Co. Replogles & other families left for

Ritchie Co., W.Va. between 1831 and 1836."-Conard, c. 1971.

1841-1845: "We wondered why (Amos) didn't buy his liquor from Balser

Replogle, whose family had a distillery in connection with (his) farm ... An

old account book, obviously on the distillery still owned by Replogles and

with dates from 1841-1845 -- not a single item of rum was there, but much

whiskey of varying grades and usually sold by the half gallon, priced at 25

cents or 75 cents... We have seen the building where the stills were kept on

one of our visits back to Rockbridge (1965 and 1967). From Balser the property

passed to his son John (1) who m. late in life; thence to John (1)'s nephew,

John son of Jacob; thence to his nephew, John Oliver Tardy, who was the

brother of my husband's mother, Katharine Elizabeth (Tardy) Mays-Greene ..." -

that the Replogles came from PA...in records sent to me...'Jacob Replogle m.

1855-1856: "Dr. John Riprogal" is mentioned in the Rockbridge Co. VA

State 251 for the Cedar Hill Baptist Church. The church is still used on the
