This document contains four sections:

I. Information on the CDs.
II. Identifying, numbering and use of source documents.
III. Description of CDs.
IV. How to use the CDs.

I. Information on the CDs (standard CD-ROM access).

My CDs contain two types of information:
1. A report in register format produced from The Master Genealogist showing the descendents of Mattern Reblogel, with an index to names. It includes citations of some (not all) source documents used in entering information into my data base.
2. Images of some of the source documents used to enter information into my data base.

II. Identifying, numbering and use of source documents.

My paper source documents (letters, e-mail messages, genealogical reports, etc.) are stored in 3-ring binders. The binders are labeled Book01, Book02, etc. The paper documents are scanned using a scanner, HP scanjet5p, with the program Paprport, into the Paprport system. In the Paprport system these scanned source documents are identified by “Ref“ numbers within “Book“ numbers. The scanned source documents were selected and exported by the Paprport program from the Paprport system to folder c:\scanned_docs\book01\00001.jpg, 00002.jpg, etc. These files correspond to the paper documents identified as Ref 1, Ref 2, etc. From C:\scanned_docs, the document images are then copied to the CD as folders named Book01, Book02, etc. The images within these folders can then be viewed and/or printed from the CD using the program Microsoft Word.  An example using the CD-R disk marked "Replogle A" is as follows:
(a) Insert the CD-R disk "Replogle A" in the CD drive on your computer.
(b) Start Microsoft Word from desktop. It will show a blank document.
(c) Click on “Insert” at top of screen.
(d) Click on “Picture.”
(e) Click on “From File.”
(f) Click on down arrow in “Look in” box to show list of drives.
(g) Click on disk drive “Replogle (D:)” or “Replogle (E:)” or whichever disk drive you use.
(h) Click on disk label “Replogle A”.
(i) Double-click on Binder named “book1” for Ref 1 thru 905, or Binder “book2“ for Ref 906 thru 1686.
(j) Shows list of jpg image files, one for each document. For example, in Book1 it will show 00000.jpg, 00001.jpg, etc.
(k) Double-click on 00001.jpg to display Ref 1, or 00002.jpg to display Ref 2, etc.

IV. How to use the CDs.

Step 1 - Read genealogy text.

  1. Select the CD-R marked disk A and put it in your disk drive D: (or E:, if used). Close the drive door.
  2. From your desktop screen, click “My Computer.”
  3. In "My Computer” screen click on “Compact Disc (D:)” or “Compact Disc (E:).”
  4. You should see a screen showing: Replogle- A (D:) and showing contents as: Book01 File Folder, Book 02 File Folder, MATTERN.DOC Microsoft Word Doc.
  5. Click on MATTERN.DOC. Now you should see the first page of the genealogy with heading: “Descendents of Mattern Replogel,” “Generation One,” then begins showing lines for the first generation: “1. Mattern Reblogel was born before 1572…”
  6. Press your page-down key. Shows other lines for Mattern, including lines for his daughter Magdalena. In this section you will see memo notes referring to “Ref 5076” and “Ref 13070.” Unfortunately, source documents for those have not been scanned yet and put on CDs, so you will not be able to view them. In lieu of source documents not yet available on CDs, if they are needed, I can send you copies of those source documents as files attached to an e-mail message. But you must tell me the Ref number of such source documents to permit me to locate them in my binders.
  7. As mentioned above, there are memo notes throughout the genealogy which refer to “Ref” number(s). In addition, the computer program “The Master Genealogist” makes use of source entries which again refer to to “Ref” numbers. An example follows: “15. SARAH REPLOGLE (Johann Reblogel, Johann, Andreas, Hans, Anstatt, Hans, Mattern1) married Robert Commings on 28 Feb 1826… She has note Ref 7425. She has sources: Neal, ‘Replogle family, family group sheets’, p 00239.; Letter, …p 00580.;… p 00773.; …” The phrase “She has note” means a memo note refers to Ref 7425. But the phrase “She has sources:” means a source entry from TMG was used for “p 00239” meaning “Ref 239;” etc.

Step 2 – View and/or print source document(s).

a. Select a CD containing images of source documents to use based on the Ref number obtained from Step 1, above. Each CD covers a block of Ref numbers. Use the descriptions of CDs under ‘III. Descriptions of CDs,” above, to determine which CD to use.
b. Consider the following example for “p 00239” meaning “Ref 239,” from Step 1, above:
c. Under “III. Descriptions of CDs.,” above, in Item 2. Book01, note that Book01 covers Ref 1 thru 905. The document wanted, Ref 239, falls within this range.
d. Select the CD for Book01, which is “CD-R disk A.”
e. Place the CD ‘Replogle- A” in the disk drive and close the drive door.
f. From desktop screen, click “My Computer.”
g. In “My Computer” screen click on “Compact Disc (D:)” or “Compact Disc (E:).”
h. You should see a screen showing: Replogle- A (D:) and showing contents as: Book01 File Folder, Book 02 File Folder, MATTERN.DOC Microsoft Word Doc.
i. Click on Book01 File Folder.
j. You should see a screen “list of files,” listing files on this CD, “00000.jpg, 00001.jpg, 00002.jpg”, etc.
k. Scroll down to the line showing file 00239.jpg and click on that file name.
l. Now you should see a screen with the heading “00239.jpg – Image preview,” which shows Source 28 (TMG source number) – Husband, Balsor Replogle, 46 (TMG person ID number 46), children: Elizabeth 48 (TMG person ID number 48), etc.
