BOOK REVIEW

(From a letter by Justin Replogle:)

"I read an interesting book lately by Berkeley professor Arthur Quinn, A New World (Faber and Faber, 1994), a very dour, not to say cynical, examination of the American colonies (including Pennsylvania). He finds mostly greed, folly, barbarity, cruelty, inhumaneness. I have to say my own readings have made this seem more and more accurate."

WHO IS THIS REPLOGLE-REPROGLE?

(Each issue of RRGN will feature an "unknown" whose Replogle lineage needs to be established.)

From the 1850 Census for United States, taken 14 August, 1850, State: Pennsylvania; County: Indiana; Township: Green; Page 86; House and family number: 585 / 587. "Replogle, George, age 35 (b 1815), farmer, birthplace VA; his wife Susanna, age 25 (b 1825), birthplace VA; children Jacob, age 9 (b 1841), birthplace VA; Betsy, age 7 (b 1843), birthplace VA; and David, age 4 (b 1846), birthplace VA." This was sent to me by Zelda Dubel, August, 1994.

A LUMBER MILL IN CALIFORNIA

(The following cover letter was sent to me by Zelda Dubel [see RRGN for Spring, 1994, p. 7] in April, 1994. Her husband Robert Vernon Dubel is a descendant of Mary Ann "Polly" Replogle, who was a daughter of Richard Replogle, who was reported to be a son of John Rinehart Replogle. [For Richard Replogle see also RRGN for Spring, 1994, p. 5.] )

"This is an article I wrote and perhaps our genealogical society will publish it. I can make changes if they suggest. It reads like a research paper instead of a story.

"This is only a two year period in the life of John Wesley Golden and wife Mary Ann "Polly" Replogle, and I would guess Mary would have stayed down in the town, but it tells a bit about the business they owned.

"We have done research in Tulare and Fresno Counties (Calif.) as well as other counties and the local university, and I believe this is all we will find out about the sawmill. I am hoping some of their descendants would contact me after reading it.

"Look at a map showing General Grant Grove of trees or General Grant Tree, near Kings Canyon National Park and that is the area where the mill was located. Good sized trees grow in our area above 4,500 ft. elevation. Keep in mind that was before automobiles, too. Zelda."

TURBINE MILL, an early sawmill in Tulare County, Calif., by Zelda Dubel

My husband Robert V. Dubel's ancestors owned Turbine Mill in northwestern Tulare County at about 5,000 feet elevation, near the General Grant Grove, from 1882 to 1884. It was a small lumber mill and specific references to this mill are so rare it became a challenge. The locations of Whitaker Forest, Eshom Creek, Wilsonia and General Grant Tree can be found on present-day maps.

This was a business called John Golden & Son. John Wesley Golden (1810-1901) was the John Golden and John Davis Golden (1852-ca. 1900) was the Son. John Davis Golden declared he came to California in 1882 and came to Tulare County in 1882. Notes of interviews with old timers indicate John and Steve Golden operated it. Stephen Augustus Golden (1855-1945) was another son of John Wesley Golden, but his name does not appear in legal papers as an owner.

The legal description is: The N 1/2 of SW 1/4 of Sec 28 and N 1/2 of SE 1/4 of Sec 29, T14S, R28E, MDB&M, together with sawmill including tanks, flume, pipe, etc., called "Turbine Mill." The real property was sold at public auction to the highest bid to Mr. Whitaker for $15.00 on Jan. 19, 1884.

Tulare County Records #734 contains 91 pages. I copied one page dated 188_ because it contained the signatures of both father and son. Dates are from May 15, 1882 to July 30, 1884. This legal action is titled In the Matter of the Insolvency of John Golden, et al. (The business called John Golden & Son.) The document titled Petition for Order Setting Apart Personal Property lists possessions of John Davis Golden, Oct. 25, 1883. Personal property: "2 red work oxen, about 7 __, one ox yoke and one two-horse lumber wagon, also one hog and the household and kitchen furniture and __ and bedding of said John D. (Davis) Golden." I couldn't read some words.

At California State University at Fresno, Madden Library, Woodward Room, Special Collections, I looked at all their books about Tulare County history or genealogy and made the following notes:

The book A Modern History of Tulare County by Limited Editions of Visalia, Inc., 1974, showed a picture of lumber being hauled downhill by 8-horse teams. No year is given. Actually, books about the early lumbering industry and flumes in Tulare and Fresno Counties are plentiful but I found no Golden names in them.

A bound volume of Los Tulares, publications by Tulare County Genealogical Society, has an index which contains no Golden names. Los Tulares, Issue No. 6, Oct. 1950, pp. 1 and 4, has an article about early sawmills in Tulare County. Smith & Hatch had a mill on the Whitaker Ranch in 1856. Smith Comstock had one in 1883 near the entrance to General Grant Park. Wallace Elliott published the earliest general history of Tulare County which gives a detailed account. They cut sugar pine trees near the Wilsonia area, and sequoia and yellow pine and probably fir. In 1889 they dammed Meadow Lake and Sequoia Lake was formed. Water was used at the mill to operate the flume 60 miles to Sanger, Fresno County. Elliott's book does not mention the Golden name.

Mills of the Sequoias stories were mimeographed and could be obtained from the Secretary of the Society. I have not seen those stories.

In 1900 Stevenson purchased the "old Golden place" on the corner of Sierra Way and Crawford Avenue. No Golden name was given.

From the Schutt Collection by Harold G. Schutt of Lindsay, I searched a file of loose papers which are his personal and mostly handwritten notes:

1. "Early Lumbering in the Tule River Area." "Interview with Mrs. Jesse Pattee, Orosi, Feb. 17, 1927. Mrs. Hale Tharp was aunt of Mr. Pattee. He [Mr. Pattee] arrived in Visalia Nov. 18, 1881. Mrs. Pattee now 82 years old. Only mill then running was one belonging to John and
Steve Golden located on Eshom Creek just below Whitaker Forest. Operated with water turbine. Mrs. Pattee cut slabs (at this mill?). Mr. Pattee first worked in woods with Chris Evans (1883). Wagy had a mill above this."

LETTERS

From PAUL BROVONT of Box 13 Rt 2, Camden, IN 46917 (ID 11E:33A:1, see RRGN Fall, 1993, p. 4) came a letter dated April, 1994: "I am enclosing a picture of Peter Replogle, my great, great grandfather (ID 11E, b. 1785 and d. 1861). I had always wanted to find a picture of him, finally I found one at my cousin's house, Dr. George Wagoner (ID 11E:339:3)." He enclosed a picture of a man with long hair, mustache and short beard, clad in vested old-fashioned suit, the photo undated. Could it have been taken ca. late 1850's? This is probably the oldest photo of a Replogle in my files.

In August, 1994, Mr. Brovont wrote as follows: "Dr. George Wagoner passed away April 17, 1990, but I know Dr. Ed Wagoner, Dr. George Wagoner's son. Dr. George Wagoner was showing me some pictures a few years ago, we came across that one of Peter Replogle, it was in with some pictures of his sister Ruth Darraugh who passed away a few years earlier and I presume it came from their mother Mrs. Dr. Edward Wagoner. Dr. Edward Wagoner's wife (Della) was a sister of my mother Addie (Replogle) Brovont, Peter was their great grandfather. As to when the picture was taken I have no idea.

"Peter Replogle had quite a large real estate holding in this area. My parents bought and lived on 100 acres that he owned. My brother bought and lived on 40 acres that he had owned. Jesse Zook told me of other farms that Peter had owned."

From WALTER J. PRYOR of 3526 Reserve Drive, Medina, OH 44256 (ID 114:352:411, Walter J. Pryor / Lenore Replogle Pryor / Homer M. Replogle / Charles Brumbaugh / Rinehart Long / Rinehart / Rinehart ("Jr.") / Johann Reinhard / Philip / Andreas / ?) a letter of April, 1994 together with considerable data on his line of Replogle ancestors. He wrote: "As per our phone conversation, I am enclosing copies of the genealogical material concerning our branch of the family. No doubt you already will have most of this information but perhaps it can fill some holes. This was originally researched by Luther Replogle (ID 114:352:5) who was the founder of the Replogle Globe Co. of Chicago. It has been updated, compiled and entered into a computer database by his niece Shirley Brendtke (ID 114:352:21)."

From JUSTIN REPLOGLE (see RRGN, Winter, 1994, p. 5) a letter dated April, 1994 and data for Samuel B. Replogle (ID 11E:76); his note on Samuel was as follows: "Dates and places for Samuel B. Replogle, wife, and children are taken from a handwritten sheet dated (at the top) 'Rossville [IN] Dec 16 1888.' I got this sheet from Mary Bricker in 1993 during her 100th birthday celebration. Mary Bricker's mother was Hannah Replogle, Samuel's daughter. Some of these dates differ from those in the RRG. On the back of the sheet, same place, date, and hand, are the dates for the John Bricker and Hannah Replogle family. The minister who married Hannah and John is named, Isaac Cripe, the date is given as November 7, 1878, the place as Clinton Co. IN. It seems very likely that both sides of the sheet were written by Hannah Replogle Bricker herself." Justin also sent a large report titled "Descendants of Stephen Ulrich." It had much Replogle genealogical data.

From RALPH W. BROWN (see RRGN, Summer, 1993, p. 5) under date of April, 1994. His great. great. grandfather was Samuel B. Replogle (ID 11E:76). He said: "I will send the family sheet back to you with all this information & up-to-date as possible... My wife was a secretary for years and therefore can still type beautifully but I have a hard time getting her to type for me!"

From NANCY RAE DURHAM LECHNER of 48 Travis Rd., Tulia, TX 79088 (114:435:181, Nancy Rae Durham Lechner / Velma Shuss Rae / Daniel Replogle Shuss / Nancy Zook Replogle Shuss / Daniel Brumbaugh Replogle / Daniel Brown / Rinehart ("Jr.") / John Rinehart / Philip / Andreas / ?) some data on her immediate family. She asks, "Do you want a list of my children and grandchildren?" Yes, I will put all data on Replogle descendants into my computer and in a revised edition of RRG.

Balzer Replogle (Johann Balthasar Replogle, ID 12 and UA-3.2) resided Rockbridge County, VA. I donated a copy of a computer-generated descendants report printout covering his descendants -- as they were stored in my database as of April, 1994 -- to Rockbridge Historical Society, 101 East Washington, P.O. Box 514, Lexington, VA 24450. Their collection is kept in Special Collections, Washington and Lee University Library, Lexington, VA.

Philip Replogle ("Jr.") (ID 112:2) married Elizabeth ("Betsy") Gossart "about 1805 probably PA" according to RRG. Elizabeth was the daughter of John and Mary (Kiefer) Gossart. John Gossart resided Franklin Co., PA and is buried there near Greencastle. In an effort to learn more about these family connections, I contacted a professional genealogist named Jere S. Keefer of Mercersburg, PA. He sent a copy of a family group sheet he "got from the Gossard folder at Kittochtinney Historical Association at Chambersburg, PA. This indicates that Mary Keefer (husband of John Gossart) was born at Leitersburg, MD." Another family group sheet states Elizabeth Gossart, wife of Philip Replogle, "lived at Leitersburg District, MD." Both the Gossart and Kiefer families are thereby associated with Leitersburg, MD or "the Leitersburg District, MD." Were the Replogles there too? Possible, but needs more research. Where did Philip meet Elizabeth? Not, it appears from Jere Keefer's research, at Franklin Co., PA.

From MORRIS J. REPLOGLE of 2305 Wing St., Rolling Meadows, IL 60008 (ID 11E:792:9, Morris J. Replogle / Frank Grover / William H. / Samuel B. / Peter / John Rinehart / Philip / Andreas / ?) comes a letter under date of April, 1994. He provided much data for the descendants of Frank Grover Replogle (ID 11E:792). "Enclosed please find genealogy to date. I've been trying to finish this for 10 years... I've really gotten into this due to insistence of cousin Justin Replogle. As you probably know, he & I attended Mary Bricker's 100th birthday party last July in San Diego... I have about 4 hours of video tape of our conversations. Too bad there wasn't video 200 years ago, huh? ...I have pictures, obits, letters, etc. The most precious are the postcards that Great-grandfather Samuel wrote to grandfather William when they were apart in the 1870's & early 1880's... If you know of someone moving here (Chicago area), give them my name and I'll sell them a house."

Because Morris is in the real estate business, this reminded me of a letter I received years ago from a Replogle who was a Realtor in Boston, MA; I wrote back and asked for more information so I could attempt to find his lineage, but never heard from him again. Usually if I can get his father's and grandfather Replogle's names the chances are good I can connect the person up using my 17,000-name computer database. Of course, we are all cousins.

From ELINOR F. ZOLLER LEISTNER of 3363 Pershing Ave., San Bernardino, CA 92405, wife of LOUIS LEISTNER (ID 112:417:31, Louis Leistner / Mary Lucretia Replogle Leistner / George Negley Replogle / John, Sr. / John Henry / John Philip / John Rinehart / Philip / Andreas / ?) came a letter of May, 1994: "I am enclosing the records you requested... Good luck in an ambitious program." She furnished data on families of Louis and Harold Leistner.

JERRI BURKET (RRGN, Spring, 1994, p. 8) sent me a data file via the Prodigy computer network giving information about Burket descendants down from 114:436:3 Harriet Viola Replogle Burket, a large branch of the family. This updates her previous information. She also sent me some 1850 Pa. census entries from her CD-ROM using a search program. These arrived in April, 1994.

JOHN OPFELL (Prodigy network ID TNSV63A) sent Jerri Burket a Prodigy message in May, 1994: "I offer the fact a Replogle vouched for my great grandfather when he applied for naturalization in 1845. He was a resident of St. Joseph County, IN, at that time and had immigrated there from Bad Blankenburg, Thuringia in 1841. The document is in the archive of the St. Joseph County Recorder's office in South Bend."

RUBY GILBERT of R.R. 1, Box 37G, Osceola, MO 64776 (ID unknown. Her mother was ID 11E:741:1 Lola E. Replogle / Henry Clayton / Abraham C. / Samuel B. / Peter / John Rinehart / Philip / Andreas / ? ) , a letter of May 15, 1994: "I am 71 years old. I work at our local hospital here, I'm going on my 18th year. I lost my husband in 1976. I have 3 children. Anita May & Barbara Kay live here in Osceola. My son Louis Ray lives in Nixa, MO close to Springfield. I have 9 grandchildren & 11 great grandchildren."

In a later letter dated Aug. 1994 Ruby wrote: "A friend & I made a trip back East (Pennsylvania) and visited the Replogle farm. Went to the little cemetery where Replogles are buried, Morrison Cove. Saw school (Jacob) Leonard Replogle built in 1929. Was in Johnstown, PA and visited the Replogle Moving & Storage building. Came back through Rossville, Indiana. Visited cemetery where cousin Morris Replogle's parents were buried. Beautiful country. Was a trip of a lifetime for me. I have just found out about all this last summer when Morris Replogle came to Missouri and saw me."

JAN SNODGRASS of 2136 E. Sprague Rd., Broadview Heights., OH 44147-1397 (ID unknown) (Prodigy HKSW83A) sent a message to Jerri Burket, May 27, 1994: "I am interested in finding the family of William Replogle who married Lottie Lavina Wolfe. They had 3 or 4 children, Ollie, could have been Olive or Olivia; Ona, may have been the child of W.H. Wolfe; Tessie; and Bessie Thelma who was my grandmother (born April 5, 1887 in Mahaffey, PA). William Replogle was known as Rattlesnake Bill and worked on an Indian reservation in Washington state. His mother was half American Indian from the Delaware tribe. On May 30, 1994: "I don't know where in Washington state William lived. Just have a picture of him on horseback at a unidentified Indian reservation. W.H. Wolfe was Lottie's brother and may have taken William's daughter to raise."

Later (September, 1994) she sent added information on this family, as follows: George Replogle (Jr.?) resided 1860 Cherryhill Twp, Indiana Co., PA. His wife was Jane (Jennie) Decker, b. 1833. Their children: 1. Madison, b. 1853. 2. William R., b. 1855. 3. Rebecca, b. 1857. Elizabeth, b. 1860. (Birth dates from the 1860 census.)

There has not been much research on the Replogles at Indiana Co., PA. There was at least one other Replogle family at Indiana Co., PA, that of 11D:25 Daniel Replogle, whose wife Mary Helman was b. 1835, Indiana Co., PA. Their son Josiah Craig Replogle was b. 1859 at Marion Center, Rayne Twp., Indiana Co., PA. (RRG, p. 321.)

JACQUALYN BAKER of 305 North Washington Ave., Clearwater, FL 34615 (ID 114:436:515:1, Jacqualyn Louise Baker / Wayne Richard Baker / Orpha Mae Bush Baker / Rosanna Replogle Bush / Andrew Zook Replogle / Daniel Brumbaugh / Daniel Brown / Rinehart / John Rinehart / Philip / Andreas / ? ), June 3, 1994: "My great grandmother's name was Rosann Replogle, born Sept. 2, 1883, died Nov. 13, 1971. Her parents were Andrew Zook Replogle, born Mar. 22, 1853, died Sept. 20, 1893. Her mother was Nancy Jane Snowberger born July 7, 1854, died July 11, 1929. Rosann Replogle was married to William Nelson Bush Aug. 13, 1902. They had 12 children." Then on June 10 she sent data and wrote: "I have enclosed the information on my great- grandmother's family. My grandmother Orpha Mae Bush is the oldest in her family. Several years ago she did a book on the Bush family. Would you know if the Sniders (in Replogle information) are related to the Jacob Snider Sr. family of Bedford Co., Pa. and if the Stayers are related to the Adam Stayer family of Bedford Co., Pa. I believe Adam Stayer's father was either John or Micheal Stair / Steere. I know the Stayers are related to the Bakers." She sent much data on the 114:436:5 Rosann Replogle descendants. In June, 1994 she sent additional data on the descendants of Rosann Replogle Bush.

A June, 1994 letter from Grand Rapids, MI: "Your name caught my eye while I was leafing through The Genealogical Helper. For years, the Replogle mine was one of the largest local employers where I grew up. Perhaps you would like to investigate the area for relatives? The mine no longer exists but it was located in Morris County, New Jersey, on the Roxbury Twp. - Mine Hill Twp. line. I think it was in Mine Hill but I couldn't swear to it. The mine closed in the late 1960's or early 1970's. - Ellen Sier." In response to an inquiry I made, in September, 1994 Cheryl Turkington, of the Local History Dept., The Joint Free Public Library of Morristown & Morris Township, Morristown, NJ, wrote to me: "I am currently indexing The Jerseyman newspaper and remember reading your name, Replogle, and thinking how unusual it was. Shortly thereafter, I came across your letter. I enclose some articles from The Jerseyman that mention the mine and J. Leonard Replogle. The Replogle Mine was located in Wharton, a small town that borders Roxbury and Mine Hill. According to local sources, the mine was quite successful until the Depression years, when it all but closed down." She and the newspaper articles refer to Jacob Leonard Replogle (114:312:5, Jacob Leonard / Rinehart Zook / David Long / Rinehart / Rinehart ("Jr.") / John Rinehart / Philip / Andreas / ? ) who owned the mine as a part of his steel business in 1920. He had no children.

From ROGER RADDATZ of 14196 Marc Dr., Pine Grove, CA 95665 (ID unknown), July, 1994: "I am working on my Replogle Genealogy and am stuck. I've gotten a letter from Mrs. William Powell (RRGN Winter, 1994, p. 8) saying you might be able to help me. I'm looking for John N. Replogle, who was born in Penn. a couple of decades before 1881. I'm also looking for information on his mother or father." I was unable to help Roger. I don't have such a person as John N. Replogle in my computer database.

In July, 1994 I received some marriage records from JERRI BURKET (RRGN Spring 1994 p. 8) over the Prodigy computer network. She is Prodigy ID JFMW08A. From my computer database, I could identify most of the persons shown in the data, but three of these Replogles I could not identify and had to put them in my "unknowns" file:

1. Sarah Justice m. George Replogal on 24 July 1841 at Pulaski Co., IN.

2. Rebecca Hunt m. Jacob Replogal, Jr. on 7 July 1814, at Butler Co., OH.

3. Mr. Elexander (could this be "Alexander"?) m. Margaret Ruplogel on 11 Feb. 1847 at Darke Co., OH.

As usual, the surname "Replogle" is misspelled in these old records.

From Paul Kriner of 4423 Wimbleton Way, Kalamazoo, MI 49009 (ID 11C:323:211, Paul Andrew Kriner / Jane Ruth Livinghouse Kriner / Albert Grover Livinghouse / James W. Livinghouse / Catherine Replogle Livinghouse McQuisten / Daniel Replogle, Sr. / John, Sr. / John Rinehart / Philip / Andreas / ?) a letter dated July, 1994:

"I am enclosing a diskette with a GEDCOM file containing the data on Catherine Replogle and her descendants that I currently have in my database, including their spouses. I am also including family group sheets of many of the families, for your reference.

"I attended the Livinghouse family reunion near Plymouth, IN last weekend, at which there were about 43 people. The common ancestors that I share with most of the people there were Henry and Catherine (Replogle) Livinghouse.

"I am descended from Henry and Catherine's son James, which is, therefore, the most extensive line in my database. Other family members will be sending me information on the Daniel Livinghouse, and Barbara (Livinghouse) Miller families. I will forward this material to you when I get it. By the way, Doris (Livinghouse) Dickson, from whom I got your name, is a descendant of Daniel Livinghouse."

From an obituary published in The Oregonian, October 19, 1990: "Melvin David Replogle. Melvin David "Rep" Replogle of Southeast Portland, a retired civil engineer, died Monday in his home. He was 65. Mr. Replogle was born Jan. 5, 1925, in Garden Home, and was a lifelong resident of the Portland area. He was a 1943 graduate of Beaverton High School and attended Oregon State University. He married Delores I. Parks on Feb. 9, 1963. He worked for the U.S. Department of Transportation for 30 years. He had also been a surveyor for Southern Pacific Railroad. His daughters were Marilyn L. of Palo Alto, Calif. and Elaine M. of Waltham, Mass. He had a son, Glenn W."

I cannot identify this Melvin David Replogle in my computer database, and have put him in as a "unknown." (Replogle lineage is unknown.)

From SUSAN PICKLES of 30 Meetinghouse Lane, Ledyard, CT 06339 (ID 114:489:11, Susan Edna Replogle Pickles / Frank Samuel Replogle, Jr. / Frank Samuel, Sr. / Samuel Brumbaugh / Daniel Brown / Rinehart ("Jr.") / John Rinehart / Philip / Andreas / ?) a PRODIGY message dated 5 August 1994: "I have been hitting a brick wall in my research due to fires in buildings housing vital statistics. Help! Can anyone assist me in tracking down vital statistics regarding Frank Samuel Replogle (b. Roaring Spring, PA Aug 22 1885, died Wabash, IN August 1967) or his father Samuel B. Replogle (b. ?, Bedford Co., PA, died ?, Ridgely, MD)?"

I sent Susan a message reply covering her question based on the data I had on her Replogle lineage. She messaged back on 10 Aug.: "I yelped when I read your message. Where did you get this information!!!?? My father, who knows little about his family and feels sadly estranged, will be overjoyed, too... Are you aware by the way of a previous marriage for Frank S., Sr.? The family had something of a surprise at my grandfather, Frank Sr.'s funeral."

After I mailed to her additional data, Susan sent another message on 13 Aug.: "My father and I were astounded because according to family lore, our family is Netherlands Dutch not French." (I didn't say they were French. They were German and lived in Alsace, now a part of France.) She continued: "Fifteen years ago I traveled to the hometown of my grandfather, Roaring Spring, PA. It was a town with bzillions of Replogles and a real treat to find a town where everybody can pronounce your name! At any rate, I wrote to every Replogle in the phone book... Do you have a clue as to why the three Replogles (Johannes Reinhard [John Rinehart], Johann Baltasar [Balzer] and Jacques [Jean Jacob] ) immigrated to the New World?" (There are various theories.)

Another message on 15 Aug.: "Wonder if another reason family lore might relate us as Dutch is the Metzger connection. I have a copy of Theobold Metzger's will (1691)..." (She sent me a copy of it.) "I am currently researching the life of my maternal grandmother, Edna F. Easter, M.D., who practiced in Boston 1918-1964. She was on staff at the historically significant New England Hospital for Women and Children (now defunct), which was staffed by women physicians. I am also transcribing her 1914, 1916, 1917 diaries for eventual donation to the Schlesinger Library on the history of women at Radcliffe."

She also sent me a list of Replogle families prepared by Daniel Clair Replogle of 406 Spang St., Roaring Spring, PA 16673, dated Jan. 1980. I am unable to identify Daniel Clair Replogle in my computer database, and have put his name on my "unknown" list, Replogle lineage unknown.

A message from NELSON KRUGER of Los Angeles, CA (Prodigy ID CDCM48A) dated Aug. 1994: "I just got back today from my Indiana genealogy vacation... I show Barbara (ID 115, Barbara (Lovina) Replogle / John Rinehart / Philip / Andreas / ?) in 1757 in York Co., PA and dying in 1804 in Dayton, OH. I show her father as a Rinehart Replogle. Who were her brothers and sisters and mother? Also, if you know, how the lines come down with all of the cousins?"

From SHIRLEY L. BRENDTKE of 10715 Footprint Ln., Port Richey, FL 33468-2713 (ID 114:352:21, Shirley Louise Replogle Brendtke / Blair Lloyd Replogle / Charles Brumbaugh / Rinehart Long / Rinehart / Rinehart ("Jr.") / John Rinehart / Philip / Andreas / ? ) dated Aug. 1994:

"Enclosed is the descendancy chart which I put together from the records of my uncle, Luther Replogle, which were getting pretty yellow with age. This chart lists all of the tree I have available. Up until the 4th generation this branch pretty much lived in the Pennsylvania area.

"You must have heard of my uncle Luther who manufactured globes in Chicago. I do have a very informative article on him printed in the Saturday Evening Post in April, 1954, telling about the business. He was also written up in National Geographic. The business was started by he and his wife Elizabeth by pawning her wedding rings for the money. Just heard Hillary gave Bill a globe for his birthday. Also on the MS Statendam there is a 36" beautiful globe.

"My husband and I lived in Strasbourg, France for 2 1/2 years from January '76 through September '78. I do with I had known all the family stemmed from this area as I would have had plenty of time to do some research. I had been told before that Replogle originated near Schaffhausen, Switzerland, or just into Germany from there." (I found Schaffhausen on my map, located in the most northern part of Switzerland, north of Zurich. Did the family migrate from there to Alsace before coming to America? We need to know more about this story.)

From DORRIS KEATH of Drawer 8, Sabinal, TX 78881 (wife of Medford Earl Keath, ID 112:345:63, Medford Earl Keath / Thomas Earl Keath / James Henry Keath / Susannah Margaret Replogle Keath / Frederick M. Replogle / John Philip / John Rinehart / Philip / Andreas / ? ) under date of Aug. 1994: "A trip to the U.K. got us very interested in the Keath (Keith) family and we started our search about two years ago. We had in our possession Micajah's (husband of Susannah Margaret Replogle) family bible which we treasured but really didn't know what a valuable treasure it was... Med and I are very excited about an event which is set for the month of Sept. in a near-by community of Castroville -- which was settled 150 years ago by Alsacians. Many come frequently to visit long lost relatives. This being Sesquicentennial a large delegation is expected... the president of the Chamber of Commerce is helping us identify anyone from Soultz -- if we hit "pay dirt" I promise to write to you immediately."

RESEARCH ON RICHARD REPLOGLE

Richard Replogle (see RRGN Spring 1994 p. 5 ["Who is this Replogle-Reprogle?"] and p. 7 [Letter from Zelda Dubel] ) was listed in old letters from Floyd G. Hoenstine (who is now deceased) as a son of John Rinehart Replogle.

I wrote to Hoenstine Rental Library, P.O. Box 208, Hollidaysburg, PA 16648 asking if they had any details or sources for the Richard - John Rinehart relationship. I received a reply dated Aug. 1994 from Maxine C. Dodson:

"I pulled the Replogle file and went through it page by page and found the reference to 'Richard, born 1785' but no reference as to where he got the information. Barbara (Hoenstine, daughter of Floyd G. Hoenstine) also went through the material but she could find nothing either."
