You can see a Wright Flyer assembled by Orville Wright, part of the Erie Canal, and Newcomb Tavern at Carillon Park. | On March 24, 1803, Hamilton County was divided and Montgomery County was created. The county was named for General Richard Montgomery, who lost his life in the assault on Quebec during the Revolutionary War. It included all of the present counties of Preble, Miami, Darke, Shelby, Mercer, Van Wert, Paulding and Defiance, nearly all of Allen, Putnam and Henry and about 1/2 of Lake County. It was divided into 4 townships. (Early records are stored in Montgomery County. Symes' purchase was not registered in Hamilton County.) The county is now 459 square miles in size. Dayton was settled in 1796 and was named the county seat on May 1, 1803. According to John F.
