On March 24, 1803, Hamilton County was divided and Montgomery County was created. The county was named for General Richard Montgomery, who lost his life in the assault on Quebec during the Revolutionary War.  It included all of the present counties of Preble, Miami, Darke, Shelby, Mercer, Van Wert, Paulding and Defiance, nearly all of Allen, Putnam and Henry and about 1/2 of Lake County.  It was divided into 4 townships.  (Early records are stored in Montgomery County.  Symes' purchase was not registered in Hamilton County.) The county is now 459 square miles in size.

Dayton was settled in 1796 and was named the county seat on May 1, 1803.   According to John F. Edgar there were 526 white males over 21 In Montgomery county when it was formed and 15314 In the state of Ohio.

Query Boards

Montgomery County Ohio genealogical questions can be posted or searched on the

 Rootsweb/Ancestry/My Family Boards

The NEW combination boards are faster, easier to search, and a little difficult to get used to!  Take a look, give them a try.  The link will take you to the Montgomery County Query Board or you can go to http://www.ancestry.com click on the "Message Boards" link and see just how many message boards are available!  You can search for a surname, location or name of a specific board.

Be SURE to update your 'favorites' and 'notifications' at the Ancestry site so that it is simple to return to the board(s) and so that you will receive email notification of new postings to the message boards you are interested in.

The old GenConnect boards are now combined with the My Family boards at Ancestry.com.  If you wish to look for a specific category of postings simply select the "TYPE".  You'll notice there are additional types available now, part of the benefit of the 'merger' of the boards.
