Hi Peter. I assume that Anita Olson and you got together somehow thru email and then her emails to you started coming. Yes, I am VERY interested and I know that we (both you and Janie in NY and I in Sterling) can learn much about our mom's family. Its about time, as we have had dad's stuff here and there, but almost nothing about the Mentgens. Really pleased to learn that my great-grandfather was named Mathias and his wife (Janie, our grea-grandmother), was Christine Trumm. Trumm paricularly interests me as a family here in Sterling is named Trum...Paul, my friend and playmate is here and still alive...obviously "Trumm" changed to "Trum"...but I will not contact him until I get "everything" from Anita. So, Peter, please ask Anita to email me and we will "meet" on the internet! Need to know who "Uncle Jake" was and who John Robinson is. We need that "historical sketch". My address is [email protected].

Crazy world! I am excited and desire to pursue this whole thing! Janie, Anita's reference to "Nell" is of course to Ellen Wacker, our grandmother!
As you know, you were named Jane after aunt Jane Mittelstadt and named Ellen to honor your grandmother. I will mail to you guys a p/c of mom's obit. I got it out at the office today and want to correct at once some big time mistakes. Not blaming Anita. We need her...and we can help her get more correct info for her files to get more facts straight.

Important facts re mom: Thelma Giacomini (no middle name or initial) was born Thelam Mentgen on November l4, l899 in Stanberry, Missouri to A. P. Mentgen and Ellen Wacker. Mom was the oldest and I NEVER HEARD ABOUT TWO GIRLS BEING BORN AND DYING BEFORE MOM! To get ahead of myself, I also never heard about Ellen dying in child birth (I KNOW it was not delivering Louise, but I will contact Chuck but not just yet)...however, Anita may have the facts. This would mean that the 2 dead children were born after Louise and that Ellen died delivering the last one...causing all 3 to be buried in Wymore. There are so many things that we need to first learn about. So, if mom came to Sterling in l905 with Ollie (never heard him call that...it was Al) then all 2 girls were born within 6 years. The obit is correct...the 4 girls came to Sterling in 1917 with her PARENTS...so Ellen died in 1917. William had nothing to do with it...except he was much like our uncle William Giacomini...who "ran everything" and everybody. Enough of this for my 2d Reply. Lets keep this going. Love, Bob

Hello, sorry so long in replying, but I don't have Dob for Aloys children only names at this time. I'm working on communicating with my great uncle, who has gathered the info I have. Hopefully he has it. I'm including what I have on how Aloys parents met, and the story of how Mathias got to America. Interesting stuff.
"Mathias Mentgen lived at Trier, Germany which was seperated from France by the Mosel River. His father operated a ferry boat to take passangers across the river to France. Mathias used to go with his father and knew how to operate the boat. One hot night in the summer he and his brother, Jake were sleeping outdoors when two men came and asked if they would take them across the river and not make them sign the register They were political escapees and said they would them well. So the boys took them across. They said they were escaping to America and were going to Buffalo, New York. The said they wanted to come to America to escape Army service, so the men told them to land at Buffalo, New York and they would help them. The men gave the boys money and gave Mathias a cutting diamond imbedded in a handle. The boys never said a word to their father about taking the men across. The next day police officers came and aske! d ! thier father if he had taken those men across during the night. He said "No" and the boys denied it also. In 1852 Mathias and "Uncle Jake" and another boy came to Amercia, on being smuggled on board due to lack of passage, and landed in Buffalo New York. The men had gone down to meet all ships coming in and sure enough they found them. They gave all three of the boys jobs in New York and Mathias lived in New York for awhile learning painting. It is not known when Mathias left New York and came to Peru, Il. " This story was taken from the book given to Louis (Luke) Richard Mentgen at a family pinic on October 6, 1991. It is written as a historical sketch. I believe it was written by John Robinson.

History of cutting diamond taken from same historical sketch.
"Grospapa (Mathias) brought it to the United States with him. It was always the family pride. He used it to cut glass when he was doing painting and paperhanging and repair jobs and it was always kept in the brown wooden strong box with the family papers. About ten years after Grosmama moved from the farm in 1901 it was lost."

I have more info that I haven't entered info the computer yet. But can forward if interested. I also have a letter from Edward to Catherine, Aloys siblings if you would like. It gives some info on there childhood.
Talk to you later.

Hi,

Yes, the second e-mail is correct: Jacob, Martin, Abraham. I have to
apologize for
the carelessness. The chart I was copying from is a little confusing!
Also, the
the birthdate for Jacob & Elizabeth's son Abe was 6/6/1766. I don't know
WHERE that other date came from! Thank you for being so alert!

Dorie
