John BATE [Pedigree]
John Bate is named in the will of his son Henry, dated 20 May
1478. He had a brother named William. Source : Bates, Newton

Thomas, James, or John BATE (-1485) [Pedigree]

Son of Henry BATE and Agnes

George Bates lists Thomas Bate, who died in 1485, OR John Bate,
who died in 1492 as the father of John Bate, who died in 1522.
Source : Bates, George E. _Bates - Breed Ancestry_, Boston, MA,
       1975. Section A1 p. 18.
Harding lists the source of this line as Thomas Bate of Lydd,
Parish of All Hallows, England. He died in 1485.

Newton Bates gives several possibilities for the lineage of
       John Bate. He writes,
"The ancestry of this John is not certainly determined. A
commonly accepted statement has been that he was a son of
Thomas Bate of Lydd, who died in 1485, leaving a son John: but
       another authority gives the following:--
       1. John Bate of Lydd, named in the wills of his brother William
and his son Henry, both wills dated 1478.
       2. Henry Bate of Lydd, wife's name Agnes, will dated May 20,
1478, had children, James, Simon, Andrew, and Thomas.
       3. James Bate of Lydd, wife's name Agnes, will dated Jan. 14,
1491, had children, John, Thomas, and George. This John, son of
James, is given as the ancestor who died in 1522. But Thomas
Bate, brother of James, had two sons, John and William. It is
possible that this John, son of Thomas, is the ancestral John
who died in 1522. If this conjecture be correct the line would
be through Thomas Bate as follows: (Thomas Bate of Lydd, died
in 1485, leaving two sons, John and William.)"

Clement BATES (1595-1671) [Pedigree]

Son of James BATES (-1614) and Mary MARTINE

       REF Bailey1
Came from Hingham, England with the second company that came to
       Hingham, Mass.
Clement Bates embarked from London on 6 Apr 1635 on the Elizabeth
with his wife Anne and 5 children,
       James(14) Clement(12) Rachel(8) Joseph(7) Bengamin(2).
They also brought two servants, John Wynchester(19), and
Jervice Gould(30). They travelled with Clement's brother James,
James' wife Alice Glover, and their 4 children. There were 77
passengers on the ship, plus the crew.
Source : George E. Bates, _Bates - Breed Ancestry_, Boston, MA,
       1975
Whitney says that Clement came over either on 6 Apr 1635 on the
Planter OR on the Elizabeth. He was a tailor, and the family
settled in Hingham, Mass. (See Ballou's _Milford History_)
Source : Whitney, Henry A., "The Bates Family of Bellingham",
_The Bates Bulletin_, September, 1909, pp. 8-9.
From _The Bates Bulletin_, October, 1919, it can be inferred
that Clement had another son named Samuel.
Source : _The Bates Bulletin_, October, 1919, pp. 42-43.
According to Harding, Clement, age 40, his wife Anna, also age
40, and five children embarked from London on 6 Apr 1635 on the
"Elizabeth", William Stagg master. Their children were :
       James b 1621
       Clement b 1623 d Nov 1639, drowned.
       Rachel b 1627 d Jun 1647
       Joseph b 1630
       Benjamin b 1633
Samuel b 24 Mar 1639 at Hingham, MA
This agrees well with Bates, except that Joseph's birth year
does not match the age Bates gives.
On 18 Sep 1635, Clement received a grant of land of about 5
acres on Town (South) street in Hingham, MA. Clement died on 17
Sep 1671 at the age of 75. Harding gives exerpts of his will,
       dated 12 Oct 1669.
Source : Harding, Louis B., _Bates_, unpublished family notes
Newton Bates claims that Clement was baptized, rather than
born, on 22 Jan 1595 at Lydd, England. He confirms the crossing
information given above, as well as the land grant information
and the children's names and birth years. Clement died on 17
       Sep 1671.

Newton Bates confirms the above information, listing her as Ann
       rather than Anne or Anna.

       James in between.

Joseph BATES (1628-1706) [Pedigree]

Son of Clement BATES (1595-1671) and Ann (1595-1669)

Joseph was probably born in Biddenden, County Kent, England, a
village near Lydd. He came to New England with his parents in
1635 on the Elizabeth at the age of 7.
He married Esther Hilliard in Hingham, Mass. They had at least
6 children, 5 from the _Bates - Breed Ancestry_, and one
(Joshua) found in _The Bates Bulletin_, October, 1919. These
       children are :
       Joseph b 28 Sep 1660 d 3 Nov 1714
       Caleb b 30 Mar 1666 d 18 Jun 1716(1) or 25 Aug 1747(3)
       Joshua b 14 Aug 1671 d 23 Sep 1757

Source : _The Bates Bulletin_, October, 1919, pp. 42-43.
Harding lists 9 children of Joseph Bates and Esther Hillard,
matching Bates' list and adding the following :
       Esther b 29 Aug 1663
       Hannah b 31 Oct 1668
       Abigail b 16 Oct 1680
Unfortunately, Harding says that Joseph's will refers to 4 sons
and 4 daughters, which gives us one daughter too many.
He was a "Bricglayer", Constable from 1675 to 1678, Selectman
"1671_1677_ 1684_1692." He was appointed Sexton of the Parish
in 1673 and served in this capacity until a new meeting-house
was erected. He lived in his father's home in Hingham. All of
his children were born in Hingham, as well.

Newton Bates claims that Joseph was born in 1630 in England. He
married Esther Hilliard on 9 Jan 1657-8 in Hingham, MA. He
confirms the names and birth years of the children listed above
(both sets), giving Bathsheba's birth year as 1674. He was a
bricklayer, constable, selectman 4 times, and sexton of the
parish. He died 30 Apr 1706.

Son of Joseph BATES (1628-1706) and Esther HILLIARD (1642-1709)

Joshua Bates' house was built in 1695, and was still standing in
1919 on South Main Street, Cohasset, (formerly Hingham)
       Massachusetts.
He was a member of the first school board committee in 1728,
and was one of three people to plan for a new meeting house in
1746. "In 1749, he was taxed for one half dwelling house, one
half acre orchard, one half acre tillage, six pasture, four
slaves, and two cows." (_Bates Bulletin_, Oct, 1919.)

Harding gives Elizabeth's birth date as 23 Nov 1703, and
Isaac's birth date as 3 Mar 1707-8, but otherwise agrees with
the _Bates Bulletin_. He cites the _History of Hingham, Volume
II_ as the source of this info.

married Rachel Tower on 15 Jan 1695-6. He confirms the

birth year as 1670 and Isaac's as 1708.

John BAYLEY (1640-1686) [Pedigree]

Son of Thomas BAYLEY (-1681) and Ruth (-1681)

John BAYLEY was born in Weymouth, Massachusetts and was made
Freeman in the Massachusetts Bay Colony 23 May 1673. He was a
non-commissioned officer in some of the early military
companies of Weymouth. In 1664, 1667, and 1674/5, Corporal John
Bayley was chosen fence viewer for Weymouth. On 7 Mar 1669/70,
he was chosen way warden. In 1671, John Bayley and others were
chosen to arrange with their reverend pastor how much he should
receive per annum. In 1675/6 during King Philip's War, he
received a military promotion, "Sergent John Bayley
Commissioner from Weymouth to Boston twice." At the opening up
of lands in Freetown, Massachusetts, in 1683, John Bayley of
Weymouth and Thomas Drake, bought land and removed there about
1685. His wife's name was Hannah. He died 22 June 1686.

Thomas BAYLEY (-1681) [Pedigree]
There were four of the name Bailey - Bayley among the early
settlers of Massachusetts: Thomas of Weymouth; James and
Richard (brothers) of Rowley; and John of Salisbury. Thomas
Bayley Sr. (Old Planter) of Wessagussett was admitted as a
freeman in the Massachusetts Bay Colony on 13 May 1640. He was
the first of the Bayley name in New England. His wife's name is
unknown. They had the following children: John, Thomas, Samuel,
and Esther. Thomas Bayley's farm and home of 25 acres was
located on the southerly side of King Oak Hill and was bounded
on the west by Rockey Hill, Rockey Glen, or Rockey Nook, on the
old Indian Trail. leading from East Weymouth to Weymouth
Landing, crossing what is now Essex Street, near the town farm.
The celler hole of his house and all his farm lands are still
traceable today (1899). "In 1644 Thomas Dyer sould unto Thomas
Baylie, the 21st of the 3rd month, his dwelling-house, Barne,
and Sellar, his garden and yarde, both of them contayning by
estimation, one quarter of an acre of land being more or lesse,
bounded on the East with the land of Robert Lovell, on the West
with the land of Mr. Webb, on the North with the land of saied
Thomas Dyer, and on the South a highwaie." This sale of real
estate is one of the first records placed on the books of the
town of Weymouth. Thomas Bayley also received land in the first
and second division of lands in Weymouth and he owned land at
Weary Land in Hingham. He was a prominent man of the town in
his day, and held many offices. In 1643 he was appointed one of
the appraisers of the estate of William Fry of Weymouth. In
1655 he was one of the appraisers of the estate of Elizabeth
Pitty of Weymouth. In March 1655, Thomas Bayley and William
Chard were chosen constables to serve for the ensuing year. His
wife was probably not living at the time of his death, as he
makes no mention of her in his will. He died in 1681 and was
probably buried in the Old North Cemetery, in North Weymouth.
Thomas Bayley was on a list of 14 Dec 1663 for lots in the
first and second division beginning on the Braintree Line in
Weymouth, and he received lot 31 in the division of 2 Feb
1651/2 in Weymouth. The town of Weymouth, Norfolk County,
Massachusetts, was formerly called the plantation of
Wessaguscus. On 2 Sep 1635, the name was changed to Weymouth.
On 3 Sep 1635, bounds between Weymouth and Hingham were
established. On 9 Mar 1637, Round Island and Grape Island were
granted to Weymouth, and on 31 Mar 1647, bounds between
       Weymouth and Abington were established.
