Daniel appears in Montgomery Co tax records from Mar 1801 through Mar 1813, in Cheltenham Twp. He does not appear in Mar 1800, nor from Mar 1814 through Mar 1817 inclusive. For much of this period, he only pays an occupation tax as a “labourer,” but he does pay tax on a cow in 1804, and 1806-11. In 1812, it appears that his occupation is more prosperous than others, since he is taxed at triple the value of some other people. A check of Montgomery Co land records reveals no property owned by Daniel during this period.
Daniel Arbuckle, native of Ireland (a former subject of the king of the United Kingdon of Great Britain and Ireland), then a resident of Philadelphia County, made a Petition for Naturalization in the “Court of Common Pleas now holding a Court of Quarter Sessions for Philadelphia County” on
19-Sep-1808. Copy in possession of Doug Arbuckle.
105 It appears that Daniel made his mark instead of a signature, suggesting that he could not write.
The petition states that Daniel had resided within the United States for upward of twelve years, placing his immigration no later than about 1796. William Rowland was the citizen who supported Daniel’s petition; Mr. Rowland signed his name. It is unclear what relationship existed between Daniel and William Rowland.
