Joseph W. Dixon was born the fifth child of William Dickson/Dixon and his wife Ellendor Teague. He was born about 1831, probably in Burke Co., NC, and died 1903 in Franklin Co., AR.

He moved with his parents to Sullivan Co., TN where he is counted in the 1840 census with his parents. By 1850 he is listed on the census with his parents in McMinn Co., TN.

As shown in a deed, William Dickson’s heirs are named as residents in McMinn Co., TN Deed Book O: (200) 21 Aug 1865—"F. A., William B., and John J. Dixon, and Elizabeth Cole to J. W. Dixon, all heirs of William Dixon dec'd." Joseph W. Dixon acquired the land from his siblings left to them as heirs of  William Dickson.

Joseph W. Dixon married Mary Ann Tanner on February 20, 1868 in McMinn Co., TN. Mary was born in Union Co., GA on March 16, 1849. To their union was born seven children (six sons and one daughter). Mary died about 1889 in Ducktown, TN.

From the births of their children you can get a glimpse of their movement. Their first two children, William F. and Charles Henry, were born in McMinn Co., TN. At some time before 1874 when George Alexander was born they moved to Georgia. The next two children, Martha Susan and John Louis, were also born in Georgia. By 1881 they were in Arkansas when their next two children, Newton Monroe and James Jefferson, were born. They were back in Tennessee when Mary died in 1889. Joseph W. returned to Arkansas where he died in 1903.
