ADDITIONAL NOTES: The spelling of the family surname was usually DICKSON prior to 1860, and usually DIXON beginning in 1860 census and court records. The recently published Acuff-Kirchner DIXON GENEALOGY is a source frequently used above. Other informants are other descendants Nellie Davis and Becky Messier. The presence of Mary DICKSON, age 35 and apparently unmarried, with the family of William and Ellen "Ellender" (TEAGUE) DICKSON in the 1850 census for McMinn Co., TN, supports the theory that William DICKSON born 1796 was a son of Joseph DICKSON Jr. born 05 Nov 1773. This same Joseph DICKSON Jr. was an uncle of Mary DICKSON, born circa 1815 in Rutherford Co., NC to John DICKSON and Margaret McKISICK; no marriage or death record prior to 1850 has been found for Mary. Further research is needed to prove these relationships.
