Alexander Westmoreland married Anne Nipper and was the first of this family found in Stokes Co, NC,. He was listed in the Tax Records of Brunswick Co, VA, where it is believed he was married, and then came to Stokes County, NC where he appeared in the 1790 Census of Stokes Co. Alexander and Anne had at least nine children, some of them were born in VA and others in Stokes County. One of his children was David S. Westmoreland. It is not known when Alexander died or where he is buried, although it is believed he was buried on the farm near Redband Creek in Stokes Co, NC. There are a lot of his descendants still living in Stokes County and some of them still own and live on part of the original Westmoreland farm.

David S. Westmoreland and his wife (wives) are buried on his old home place, now called the Perrell Farm below Germanton, NC. Descendants of his daughter, Lucinda (married Emanuel Perrell) owned and occupied a portion of the original Westmoreland plantation. The spring from which the first Westmorelands obtained their water is known today as Perrell's Spring.

The "Heritage of Stokes County, NC" contains two articles with information on Harbard Barnham Westmoreland. One lists him as the son of Alexander & Ann Nipper; the other lists him as the son of David S. and Rebecca. Harbard's date of birth is recorded as 1793, three years before David S. and Rebecca were married. However, the 1800 Census of Stokes County shows David with 3 sons under the age of 10.... John Franklin and William and one other. It is doubtful that Harbard could be the son of David, and more probable that he is the son of Alexander and could have been living with David and Rebecca in 1800.
The 1850 Census of Stokes County lists a Harbard B. Westmoreland, born abt 1826, a chain maker, married to Elizabeth Marshall with 2 children: Clara, born abt 1847 and Mary born abt 1849.

Notes for Newsome B. Westmoreland:
Newsome and his family left Stokes Co in the late 1840's and went to Green Co, TN and are on the 1850 Census in Green Co. He probably died in Green County between 1860 and 1870 as he was listed in the 1860 census and not the 1870. His wife, Elizabeth, is listed in the 1870 TN Census living with her daughter, Perline in Greenville, TN. It is possible that he was a casualty of the war. His son, James, was a Union soldier and it is believed that his daughter, Perline's husband was a Confederate soldier. Newsome's other 2 sons, Anderson and Herbert (Harbard) may have served in the war but no records have been found.

In the Nazareth Luthern Church Cemetery, there are 2 gravestones for Hansel Westmoreland. One is an old stone with the dates 1819 & 1909. Directly behind it, is a newer double bronze marker with the following inscribed: Hansel Westmoreland 1819 - 1909 & Squire H. Westmoreland 1884 - 1909.
Hansel and his 2nd wife, Catherine Wall had a son named Squire and I believe this is their son. There are several small concrete markers with no names adjoining Hansel and his sons' gravestones and they may be other members of the Westmoreland family. Elizabeth (Betsy), daughter of John Franklin and Charlotte Horn Westmoreland, is the mother of my great, grandfather, David Washington Westmoreland, born about 1844. (Date of birth based on tombstone). She was unmarried when David was born. David's marriage license lists his mother's name as Elizabeth Westmoreland and the father's name was left blank. With no father's name and his mother moving so often between NC ,VA and TN before finally settling in MO, it has been very difficult to trace David's ancestors.

Elizabeth is listed on the 1850 Census of Stokes Co, NC with her parents and her son, David, age 3. In 1854, she married Harmon Wright in in Stokes Co. The 1860 Census of Greene County, TN shows she and Harmon Wright , along with their children, living with her Uncle, Newsome Westmoreland, and his family. Her son, David, was not listed with them. I believe the 12 year old male child listed as "P" Westmoreland on the 1860 Census, Stokes Co, living with John Franklin and Charlotte Westmoreland, is an error and that it is probably Elizabeth's son, David. David would have been that age.

Harmon Wright died between 1860 & 1870. Elizabeth is shown in the 1870 Census, Stokes Co as Elizabeth Wright with 5 children she had with Harmon. She is living next to her cousin, Franklin and Sarah A Westmoreland.

Sept. 8, 1872, Elizabeth married Alfred Alexander Culler in Germanton, Stokes Co, NC. Alfred Culler's sister, Eveline, married the grandson of Elizabeth's brother, Alexander, 5 years later.
By 1880, Elizabeth and Alfred Culler were in Carroll Co, VA with 3 of Elizabeth's children by Harmon Wright. Elizabeth's 1st son, David Washington Westmoreland, was living in Carroll Co in 1867 when he married his 1st wife, Phoebe Edwards. He and Phoebe left Carroll Co between 1876 & 1880 and returned to Stokes County, NC where my Grandmother, Sarah, was born.

Elizabeth and Alfred left Carroll Co and went to Madison Co, MO prior to 1900. They are listed on the1900 & 1910 Madison Co Census with one of Elizabeth's daughters, her son-in-law and their 3 children living with them. Between 1886 and 1910, her son David and his family moved to Madison Co, MO.

Elizabeth Westmoreland Wright Culler is buried in the Graniteview Cemetery in Rosele, Madison Co, MO. There are no dates on her tombstone, it only shows "Age 88." According to the age shown, she would have died about 1914.

David Westmoreland & his 3rd wife are buried next to Elizabeth. Also buried next to them, is Elizabeth's daughter, Polly, and Polly's husband, Joel Zolman. About 20 miles north of Roselle is Doe Run where Abram Wright and his wife are buried. Buried next to them is Emmaline Thorp Wright, wife of Alexander Wright.

Sarah Lusetta was less than 4 years old when her mother died. Her father married her mother's 1st cousin in 1884 who died before 1887 when Sarah's father married a third time. She spent most of her young life with her 2nd step-mother and was always closer to her half brothers and sisters than to her other siblings. The tragedies in Sarah's life continued even after her marriage. Three of her 5 children died very young, and she was only 35 when her husband died. She and her 2 small daughters had just returned to NC from IL to find a house and get things ready. Her husband was to join them as soon as he completed a contract. Shortly after arriving in NC, she received notice that her husband had died a few days after his family left. Sarah and her 2 daughters remained in Forsyth Co, NC.

NOTE:
The information for the death certificate for Sarah Westmoreland Carlisle was given by her daughter (my mother) Mary Levora who gave the year of Sarah's birth as 1881 and that date was inscribed on her tombstone. The 1880 census of Stokes Co, NC gives her age as 2 months. This would mean she was born April 11, 1880.
