George Stinson


 
    George Andrew Stinson is buried in the Old Salem Cemetery near a Federal Road Marker placed by the Monroe County Heritage Museums on County Highway 31 in Monroe Co., Alabama.  Stinson's CSA headstone reads: George Stinson Go. 9 (sic) 36 Regt Ala Inf  CSA 1836 - 1865. The Federal Road marker states in part: North of Salem Cemetery; the church there was the site of Price's Hotel the first place to spend the night on the Federal Road after Greenville.

Details from descendants:

    George Andrew Stinson was born c. 1837 in Georgia and died on September 26, 1865, in Monroe County, Alabama. George Andrew Stinson was the son of Andrew and Elizabeth Stinson.

    George Andrew Stinson is listed on the 1856 real estate list under the spelling of "Stinson." He was identified as living in Precinct 11.

    In Monroe County on November 28, 1858, George Andrew married Caroline Byrd, the daughter of daughter of Moses and Frances Byrd of Monroeville, Alabama.

    On April 4, 1862, the 25 year old farmer George Andrew Stinson enlisted in Company G of the 36th Regiment of Alabama Volunteers. He was described as standing 5 feet and 9 inches tall with dark hair, dark eyes, and a dark complexion.

    Subsequent records show that he was discharges on July 28, 1862. However, other records show that his original payroll record card was signed on March 29, 1864, at camp near Dalton, Georgia.

    George Andrew Stinson's wife Caroline Byrd was born on June 15, 1838. George and Caroline had two children: Frances Elizabeth (Fanny) Stinson and Reuben Isaac Stinson. Fanny was born on October 6, 1859, in Simpkinsville, Alabama, and died on April 1, 1949. Frances is buried in New Home Cemetery, Excel, Alabama. She married Leonard Cade Wright on January 9, 1878.

    After George Stinson's death in 1865, Caroline Byrd Stinson married David G. Wilkinson.

    George and Carolyn's son Rueben Isaac Stinson was born on June 15, 1865, in Simpkinsville, Alabama. This is near the area of Monroe County now known as Old Texas. Reuben died on August 17, 1961 and is buried at Jenkins Chapel.

    On May 9, 1886, Reuben married Arrie Maradelle Collins, the daughter of Green and Mary Andrews Collins. Arrie Maradelle was born on October 11, 1868, and died on August 1, 1865. Reuben and Arrie had nine children: John Marion, Minnie Viola, Corrie Maradelle , Oswald, Susie Adelle, Maude Bunell, Rueben Edward, Arthur Pate
and Annie Lucille.
