Barnabus McGuire Family

Barnabus McGuire, born in 1755 in County Derry, Ireland, and his wife, Jane Pendergast (Prendegass) McGuire moved to Westmoreland County, Derry area, about 1788/9. The family appears in the 1790 census. Barnabus and Jane were married in Carlisle (Cumberland County) in 1781 while Barney was serving in the Revolutionary army. He fought under Gen. Benedict Arnold and was captured at the Battle of Quebec with Timothy Connor, another early Derry settler. They escaped together after about six months in captivity and rejoined the Rev. army to fight in various campaigns under Gen. Washington. Barney died in Westmoreland County in 1825 (do not know where he is buried). His wife, Jane, died in 1835 (will on file in Westmoreland County Courthouse) in the village of New Derry.

Phillip and Robert McGuire, the sons of Barnabus McGuire and Jane Pendergass were born in Carlisle, Cumberland County. The family moved to the Derry area of Westmoreland County sometime after Robert's birth in 1789. The family appears in the 1790 census. Their children Pendergast, Nancy, Margaret and Jane were born in Derry. Barney died in 1820 and Jane in 1835. At various baptisms and marriages, according to Fr. Helbron's book, the sponsors included Millers, Eckenroths and Bucks & I conclude some of these are relatives. This does not appear to be the same Miller family associated with James A. McGuire.

There were six children: (i.) Phillip, born 1782; (ii) Robert, 1787; (iii.) Nancy; ca. 1789; (iv) James) Pendergast; 1790; (v.) Margaret and (vi.) Jane.

 i.  Phillip.  We currently have no information on Phillip and his family.
ii.     Robert  Robert Maguire served in the War of 1812. Robert McGuire married Mary Oster (sometimes called Easter) they had eleven children of whom eight survived -- Jane, George, John; Robert; William, Edward, James and Samuel. All of the sons served in the Civil War and only one was killed (Robert at Gaines Mill, VA). They all served in the 40th Pennsylvania, 11th Reserves in different companies. See information on George McGuire and Samuel McGuire.
iii. Nancy Nancy married Robert Shannon about 1817 and had four children: John Shannon who married Elizabeth Layton and moved to Indiana county; William, Martha and Jean. Robert died about 1845; Nancy appears as head of household on 1850 census for Derry
iv. Pendergrast    Pendergast married Sarah Miller in 1818 and they had Phillip, Rose, Jacob (?), James Pendergast, Daniel, George, Sarah and Ann. The family appears in the censuses through 1850. About 1858, Pendergast, Sarah and Daniel, George, Sarah and Ann and Jacob and his family headed west, eventually settling in Illinois
 v.  Margaret  Either Margaret or Jane married an unknown Sereh (possibly Sherer) based on the elder Jane McGuire's will which mentions a granddaughter, Sidney Sereh. Otherwise nothing is known about these daughters.
vi.  Jane  Either Margaret or Jane married an unknown Sereh (possibly Sherer) based on the elder Jane McGuire's will which mentions a granddaughter, Sidney Sereh. Otherwise nothing is known about these daughters.
