Obituary for Henry Clay Pedigo [#136-146-1]

ANOTHER GOOD MAN GONE

Henry Clay Pedigo died at his home in this city as a result of an attack of pneumonia last Friday night, February 9, 1912, age 56 years, one month and three days. Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Christian church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. J.W. Jones, assisted by Rev. H.L. Gleckler of the Methodist church. The funeral procession was attended by a large delegation of brothers from the two fraternal orders of which the deceased was a valued member -- the Ancient Order of United Workmen and the Modern Woodmen of America. The great crowd of friends who assembled at the last rites to do honor to the memory of the man who had been called to his eternal rest gave evidence of the high esteen in which he was held in this community where he had spent much of his valuable life and where every acquaintance was his friend. He was a noble citizen for any community and when the sod was gently placed above his remains in Green Lawn cemetery the memory of his life of good deeds and usefulness gave him a monument of grandeur and beauty such as human artists can never equal or place upon a marble column. He was an honest Christian citizen and a quiet, lovable gentleman. The brief unwritten history of his life is contained in the following record:

Henry Clay Pedigo was born in Warren county, Kentucky, January 6, 1856, and was united in marriage in that county with Lizzie Ray, September 23, 1877. Four children were born to that union, three of whom are still living. Mr. Pedigo, wife and two children moved to Pratt County, Kansas, in the fall of 1883, settling on a homestead in this county which he proved up. When the city of Pratt was started he was one of the very first residents, having erected a blacksmith shop among the first half dozen buildings. His father being a blacksmith, he learned that trade as he grew up and continued in that vocation for 27 consecutive years.

He became interested in the hardware and implement business in the city in 1898, and soon afterward quit blacksmithing. In the spring of 1901 his son, Walter, was taken as a partner in the business and the harmony and success of this partnership is known throughout the county.

The deceased was a great admirer of Abraham Lincoln and was often heard quoting his sains. He became a charter member of the Christian church of Pratt, August 28, 1884, his name being the fifth name on the membership roll.

The sadly bereaved relatives have the deep sympathy of all who knew the admirable and esteemed man who has passed away and a great concourse of people join with them in their sorrow.
