Ollie:

Thanks for the promotion orders. I still have some script from the Korean days. We looked like millionaires when we had a nickel dime poker game....

Hi Ollie,

I certainly do remember. We used script in England for three years in the early fifties. Remember the un-announced script changes. Everyone on base was restricted and had to exchange their old script to a new one and it had to be done within a couple of hours. It was done to foil the black marketers.

Yes Mr. Ollis, I remember vaguely having been paid in the fake stuff. I
had totally forgotten it until that picture came up. Lordy, that has been a loooong time ago. And why are you in possession of such? Isn't that probably illegal? Ha.
Take Care.

Yeah, Ollie, Thanks.

I worked in Finance in Germany 1950 - 1953 and handled tons of the Scrip "Military Payment Certificates." We went through one "Currency Conversion" while I was at Neubiberg Air Base, Munich, Germany and it was kept so secret that it really caught all the black marketeers by surprise. We had hundreds at the fence around the base offering GI's almost anything to take their script and convert it for them. And yeah, nickel, dime, quarter poker was great fun with all that paper script on the table.

Ollie,

Just read the "memories" on the scrip, and though late thought I'd
add my bit. We used it when I was stationed at Nouassuer AB in North
Africa in the 50's. We had a squadron "money lender" (an old M/Sgt) from
whom you could buy and sell almost anything-from cars to appliances. I
bought and sold a car from and to him during my tour. He had the bottom
two drawers of his desk packed with scrip - always wondered how he got
it all converted when they had the surprise reissue. We also had what
was known as the "floose run" - those of us who lived off base had to
use the local money - francs at that time since France still had control
of French Morocco- would give a finance weenie the amount of US money we
wanted converted to francs . He then got on a C-47 set up expressly for
that purpose and it flew up to Tangiers and exchanged it at one of the
money-changer outlets there - we always made out way better than at the
local exchange facilities. If I remember correctly, they did that from
France also. Old memory refreshed. Thanks.

John

PS Am really enjoying looking through the Web site. Can't imagine the
enormous amount of time and effort on your part to do this -
magnificent!!!
