Ollis,

I'm with class 61D. I'm preparing a SHAVETAIL UPDATE" for our
November reunion, and need to know if anyone in your class (or other classes
you might know) has the words and music to the OCS song. I want to include a
page with the words and music on it. I have a tape with the words and music,
but it's hard to put that on the printed page.

Thanks.

Ollie,
I vaguely recall seeing the words "hand written" on a note page deep inside my Sevin archive "somewhere".

If needed, I could try to find them and type them for e-mail.

Do not have music.

Lou,

How could we forget??? I don't recall all the words, but I found
myself trying to sing this many times over the years, with memories of
OCS buzzing through my mind.

Does anyone else from Savage Six remember our "Lima Flight" song? It
was sung to the tune of "Oklahoma". I believe it was written by Barnett
plus another one or two classmates.

LIMA FLIGHT SONG
Here comes Lima, we're the (grandest?) flight in OCS,
We are Squadron Six, never in a fix.
And the reason is that we're the best.

Trained by Foxtrot to be gentlemen of OCS,

Can't recall anymore.

Remember?
I do not think I have e-mail address for all, but Does anyone else
recall anymore of this song? Words - Who else wrote it ?

Sure do, Lou!!!

But I'm with "Skinny Bob".....I not only was unaware we had an official
OCS Song, I didn't even suspect it!!! If you were to ask me to nominate
one, I'd choose "Sabre Dance".....just based on the tempo at which we were
"driven".....(Remember the "Drive in here, Mister!!!!"routine? We were
forever "driving" somewhere....sans vehicle)
"Tequila" and "Purple People Eater" were Top Tunes for some of our tormented
(but Gifted) Second Class down at the 3rd Sqdn end of the long connecting
sidewalk. That long sidewalk was a virtual Carnival between
formations.....especially when the ABO Squads were out "improving" their
Parade Ground voices.

Unique terminology keeps flooding back, too. Lounge Tape, Comfortable Caps,
Nose Guards, Bunny Suits, etc......a language within a language!!

I can't believe I'm sitting here in the middle of the night recalling such
stuff from 43 years ago. Whether we like it or not , folks, those 6 months
made a lasting impression.......where did the time go? We must remember to
use our time wisely......sage advice then, and more valid now then ever.

See ya in October?

Best regards,
Jim

Dan: I do remember all the words to our Lima Flight song, because I wrote it
along with a couple of others while doing the Basement Cleaning Detail early
in Jan 58. It goes: (Tune of Oklahoma):

Here comes Lima, we're the sharpest flight in OCS.
Always on the go, always in the know.
And the reason is that we're the best.

Trained by Foxtrot to be gentlemen of OCS.
We're in Squadron Six, Never in a fix.
We're the flight that no one can surpass.

We know we belong to OCS
And OCS trains only the best

I have lost it here for now, but I did recall all the words a week or so ago.
Just having a senior moment. Can anyone remember more. We should get it
ready to sing at the reunion.

Thanks for clearing up a mystery of some 43 years!

We heard that noise over at the Thundering Third. Colvig, Brymer, Quinn and I would puzzle over the source. We conlcuded it was
some new and demented torture first class had developed. It was like a beating with a rubber hose, painful as hell, but left no trace
of the pain inflicted.

Appreciate you clearing that up. Now if we can just find the guy with the role of tape,

Bob, as you know, the beauty of music (and I use that term loosly) is in the
ear of the listener. And if you remember from SOS, one should never "Listen
to Refute".
We may, with some kind of luck (no tape), be able to present a rendition of
the song at the reunion.

As you remember, Ben was the "A cappella Choirmaster" of 58-B.........a role he just might take on again at the Reunion.
(My Texas Aggie neighbor defines "a cappella" as singing without a cappella) It's worth attending the October Event just to
hear Ben's Bunch in action!!!! There's still time!!! Book a room and plan to be there.

Dear Ollie:

I only remember that each class wrote{?} it's own song! I'M not aware of
any official OCS song per se! I especially remember Bob Fields wrote the
song for the Thundering Third - started out 'When 58-B takes to the
field....'! Still sing it occasionally - but as for an official song,
I'm pretty sure that there wasn't one. And as a percussionist in the
Drum & Bugle Corps, I surely do not remember Wally having us play one!

Could be wrong, sometimes am, and hope this is of some help!

O Lima

The song of Lima Flight, 6th Squadron, OCS Class 58 B, as worked on by Dan Seven, Vern Roddahl and Ben Halsted

To the tune of Oklahoma!

Here comes Lima Flight, the sharpest flight in OCS
Always on the go, always in the know
Were the Flight that no one can surpass.

Trained by Foxtrot to be gentlemen of OCS
Were of Savage Six, never in a fix
Reason is that 6th is the best.

Limas defeats are very few!
There is nothing that Lima cannot do!
All others wait for Lima Flight is great!
Lets pull together O Lima and well all graduate!

We know we belong to OCS
Cause OCS trains just the very best
So when we sing Were better then the rest.

Were saying Your doing fine, O Lima.

O! Lima, OK!

Am awestruck!!!!.......As a casual observer of this exchange, I feel like I'm tuned in on dialog you'd hear between George and Ira,
Rogers and Hart, Scotch and Soda..........any of those famous song writing pairs. Yep, Lads, I think Big Ben was the right
choice for Choir Director.........and with a full boat of the Sixth Squadron Songsters at The Reunion, we can picture ourselves in
spendid formations, coming "home" from an OMS Parade.....back to the OCS area after having trounced the Gadgets (and
whatever other contenders there were) once more.....with our various songs echoing off Fermoyer Hall and the adjoining
barracks........!!!! Did OCS ever lose a parade? I DON'T THINK SO.

Does this mean Vern's coming?.

Best to all you Big Six guys,

Jim

Ben,

Been off line for a couple days, had 54 messages when I logged on. Had a bunch about our Lima Song to read through. Glad you and Vern remembered the other verses.

I had that tune buzzing through my head for all these years, but never had the words right. Could only recall a few lines, which I would occasionally bellow out. Don't recall a few verses at all. Wish I had written this one down while it was fresh. When would one have found the time???

As far as I know this is the final version. Certainly can't add anything to it.

It was a fun challenge trying to recall anyway.

Ollie,
I assumed this is the song you were initially referring to. This is the one I think I have words hand written (somewhere).

If Nat has the words - I recommend taking him up on his generous offer.

Would be nice to post on our OCS web site (along with the music, if it is ever located). Is is copywrited??? If posted, all going to reunion could refresh their memory before the BIG performance.

Perhaps it would be best to title it "Officer Candidate Alma Mater" as Nat has done below.

Juno would not let me send to all the list so had to delete some names. Tried to leave all Six Sqdn - may have missed a few.

A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS:

Maalox and nosedrops and needles for knitting',
Walkers and handrails and new dental fittin's,
Bundles of magazines tied up with string,
These are a few of my favorite things.

Cadillacs, cataracts, hearing aids, glasses,
Polident, Fixodent, false teeth in glasses,
Pacemakers, golf carts and porches with swings,
These are a few of my favorite things.

When the pipes leak, When the bones creak, When the knees go bad,
Then I remember my favorite things and then I don't feel so bad

Hot tea and crumpets, and corn pads for bunions,
No spicy hot food and no food with onions,
Bathrobes and heat pads and hot meals they bring,
These are a few of my favorite things.

Back pains, confused brains, and no fear of sinnin',
Thin bones and fractures and hair that is thinnin'.
And we won't mention our short shrunken frames
When we remember our favorite things.

When the joints ache, when the hips break, When the eyes grow dim,
Then I remember the great life I've had, And then I don't feel so bad.

I can only vaguely remember the Lima Flight song. You may well be right
that Barnett was at least partially responsible. BUT:

Lou, I clearly remember one wonderful day when one of our upper-class

have been, and told me that he wanted me to come up with the words to
"Fraulein". I did find the words, although I don't have them now, I am

Joe and all Lima Flight,
Interesting to learn of your involvement with the "Fraulein" song.

Of course I remember singing "Fraulein" over and over (sometimes in my
sleep it seemed). Don't know if I heard it before OCS or not. Have
"tried" to sing it to myself many times since OCS. Never able to recall
all the words.

Seem to recall we were told it was a favorite of our Squadron Commander
and we had to sing it to him to cheer him up. He needed a lot of
cheering up it eh? ;^) Don't doubt that Baca was the guy that got us
going on it.

"O Lima" - as Ben named it - was the song of Lima Flight... I vaguely
recall Barnett reading the words off to us and singing it to the tune of
"Oklahoma". Don't know why I recall this so vividly - maybe Barnett and
I were assigned to the same room at the time. I also recalled that he
was not given the task alone, but have no idea who else was involved with
him (until Ben stepped out.)

Do you remember our first flight ramp-over? We sang "O Lima" on our
way to ramp (maybe on the way back also). Remember first class
commenting on our spirit.

Joe and Dan, and all Lima Flight:
Joe, good to see you get back in on the "Song" discussion. I had not heard
your story before about Fraulein. It was not our Lima Flight song, but we
did sing it quite a bit. Fraulein would have been a "Mountain Dew Boys"
encore, but I don't remember if we ever sang it on stage. I think Wicksell or
Carlson knew the words.

Yes, I do remember our first flight ramp over and singing Lima on our way to
and from the ramp. (Remember, I had more ramp time than anyone else in Lima,
I think.)
My memory of how the song came about. Three of us were assigned to Basement
Cleanup detail. I don't remember for sure who what there, except me. I had
just returned to the flight from being in the hospital 29 December - 4
January. So I did not know anyone yet. Dan you may have been one. And it
could have been Roddahl. I don't remember Barnett. Instead of doing much
working the three of us composed a first draft and sang it a couple of times.
Somebody typed it up and made copies and we handed it out. Only about four
or five of us ever learned the song. There was enough memory work anyway.
Anyway, those are my memories. Best always, Ben "Pappy" Halsted

Ben and all Lima,

Thanks Ben for your recollections... We all seem to recall a few things and when put together - who knows what will come
out. Most accurately recalled by the actual participant I'm sure and I definitely was not part of the composing team.

On the ramp time - do you recall Jobe & I in the "OC Club" skit and Jobe had to do (A LOT) or ramp time as a result. Paul
will remember, I'm sure.

A most embarrassing time for me on one of my early tours on the ramp:
You all know how hot and miserable it was out there. After quite some time standing & standing & standing one of the first
class approached and said, "Mr Sevin, what is the first article of the..." You all know - "I am an American Fighting man. I

serve my country and our way of life... I am prepared to give my life (and here my lips stuck together and I said "wife") for
my country."

Snickers came from all directions... I could have died of embarrassment. The first classman "tried" to control himself
but finally just turned and walked away. For the rest of that ramp session, as he walked by, he just looked and grinned. I
felt the perspiration every time he went by.
