Editor's Note: Sometimes I think Chapman started out with just a couple of notes on the family and said, "This is interesting, maybe I should do a little book on our ancestors." I'm quickly finding that in this hobby, there is no "little" project. "Where to begin?" "What to write?" "How long?" "Should I search more?" These are all common questions in the pastime known as Genealogy and Family History.

Association Briefs:

Captured by the Abnakis, by Clem PhilbrookWe recently purchased a copy of Clem Philbrook's "Captured by the Abnakis," which was published in 1966. The story is about the capture of two youths by Indians in Massachusetts (not to be confused with Job Philbrook's capture during the French-Indian War). The book was acquired by the P.P.F.A. on the online Internet auction site, Ebay.com.

PPFA Adds Civil War Roster to
Web Site

We have now posted a Civil War Roster of Philbrick & Philbrook Soldiers who served during the "War of the Rebellion." Though much research needs to be continued, it is a start. There are approximately 75 names listed, many with units, death dates and burial sites.
Much of the information is from the "Roll of Honor," which was published by the government listing the burial locations of many Union soldiers. Additional information has and is being collected from the National Archives, family histories and military records. If you have any information on a Civil War ancestor, please send it to us to add to the Archives.

The State of Ohio

Ohio Ancestors
by Robert Philbrook

I recently traveled to Ohio and was able to visit several cemeteries of my ancestors who came from Maine to Ohio in the early 1800s. Both Joel Philbrook (JC#98) and Joel Philbrick (JC#92B) were among the most early settlers of the Family in Ohio.
Many of the old gravestones in and around Licking County where the two Joels settled have been worn down from over 150 years of wind and rain. Large gouges of erosion on the stones have destroyed some of the inscriptions. If you have ancestors from this area, or other places in Ohio, we may have a photograph for you. If you have any pictures of gravestones, or any other photos you would like to share with the Association, please let us know.

(Posted by Ruth Skager on February 25, 1999)

I am looking for my great-great grandmother Rachel Philbrook. She was born 19 June 1806 at Athens, Somerset, Maine. Married Moses Stickney from Penobscot, Maine area. I visited their graves in Wisconsin but no one knows anything about her. Appreciate any help I can get.

Edwin C. Philbrick 1884-1902 MT

(Posted by Julie Server on April 6, 1999)

I am reseArching Edwin C. Philbrick. He came from Ft. Fairfield Maine in 1884; his parents were Freeman Philbrick and Mary Merrill Philbrick. Freeman was wounded in the Civil War and died of his wounds at home. Freeman's father was James Philbrick. I can trace the line all the way back to Thomas the Emigrant. Edwin was married to Nellie A. Howard, also of Ft. Fairfield, Maine. She was an interesting woman, who used the pen name Madwoman of the Rockies. Any information to be had on these two or any member of the family would be greatly appreciated!
