BOOTHBAY -- Judith M. 'Judy' Callahan, 72, died on Saturday, April 14, 2012, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

She was born on May 28, 1939, in Bangor, to Bernard W. and Grace Barnes McFadden. Judy grew up in Wiscasset and graduated as co-valedictorian in the class of 1957 at Wiscasset High School. In high school she excelled in athletics especially in basketball and softball.

After high school she got married and raised her four children in Boothbay. She worked part-time for many years at Dr. Carl Griffin's office in Boothbay Harbor. Judy obtained her real estate license on June 7, 1973. She began working with Miriam Schmidtmann and later with Ethelyn Giles.

In 1985, Judy co-founded with Bruce Tindal, Tindal & Callahan Real Estate in Boothbay Harbor. The business flourished with their the dedicated leadership. In 1994, Judy was awarded Maine REALTOR of the Year by the Maine Association of REALTORS (MAR), the first person from Lincoln County to win the award. She was named Lincoln County REALTOR of the Year in 1993, the third time she has won that award (she also won in 1984 and 1989).

Judy was very active with the Lincoln County Board of REALTORS, serving on the board of directors for 12 years including terms as its president, vice president and secretary. She also served on several committees of the Lincoln County Board. For the Maine Association, she worked on committee planning, and presented educational programs from 1980 to 1993 at the annual convention. She served as Region II vice president and has been a member of the state association's executive committee and board of directors.

Her civic involvement included being a member of the board of directors and several committees of the Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce, director of the Linekin Heights Association and Sprucewold Pool Club, past president of the Highfields Homeowner's Association, memberof the Damariscotta Area Business and Professional Women's Association, and past member of the St. Andrews Hospital Auxilliary.

In her spare time, she enjoyed working in her rock garden, watching her hummingbirds and especially spending time with her family.

She was predeceased by her parents. She is survived by a daughter, Julie Strong and her husband Mark of Thomaston, sons, William E. Callahan Jr. of Bridgton, Scott A. Callahan of Portland, Stephen B. Callahan of Westbrook; grandchildren, Mark W. Strong Jr. and his wife 'T' of Charleston, Mass., Bradley W. Strong of Thomaston, Brian P. Callahan of Watertown, Mass., Jason R. Callahan and his wife Wendy of Colorado Springs, Colo., Katherine M. Callahan of Naples, Kiel S. Callahan of Chelmsford, Mass., Bryce S. Callahan of Chelmsford, Mass.; four great-grandchildren; and former husband, William E. Callahan Sr. of Manchester.

A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 18, at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Rd., Boothbay. A memorial service to celebrate Judy's life will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 19, at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay, followed by a reception at the funeral home.
