GARDINER -- Our beloved mother, Jennie Carey, passed away Sunday, Aug. 19, 2012, at Maine General Rehabilitation and Nursing Care at Glenridge in Augusta, with her loving family all by her side. She was born Genevieve Crisostamo in Rockland on March 11, 1925, to Guissippe and Antonina Rosario Bonosoro Crisostamo. Jennie was predeceased by the true love of her life, Earl W. Carey Jr., in 1998. Her family, from Sicily, settled in the North End of Boston and, ultimately, the place Ma would always know as home, Rockland. Ma grew up in Rockland, where she worked in the sardine factory there and lived a life of an immigrant family with her brother Sammy and her sisters Sara, Beatrice and Mary. She shared many stories of life in the port city and never lost her love of being near the sea, though was never a fan of actually being on the sea. No doubt, it was here that she cultivated her strong work ethic, love of pasta and sauce, dedication to family and what we all came to enjoy as her infectious laugh, sharp wit and sense of humor. For Ma, the purpose of moving to this city by the sea was meeting Earl, the man she would adore and admire for more than 60 years. They were married on Oct. 25, 1947, and moved to Gardiner. Dad has lost his first wife to illness and so they started their family with two small children, John and Nancy. Over the next 30 years, their family grew to include Jean, who lives in Pittston with her husband, Bill, Jennifer, who lives in Manchester with her husband, Stu, Joe, who lives in our family home in Gardiner, Jimmy, who lives in New Hampshire, Jerrian and her husband Paul, who live in Chelsea, Jay and his wife Sherri from Winslow, Judy, who lives in Gardiner, and Janie and her husband Ron, who live in Pittston. They were blessed with 24 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, many of whom were with her Sunday as she went to see her loving husband Earl in God's home. Ma belonged to St. Joseph's Church in Gardiner. She worked as a stitcher at Health Tex in Gardiner for almost 30 years and was a regular at nearly every bingo game within the Gardiner/Augusta area. Ma loved her home and being there with her children and grandchildren. She particularly enjoyed family gatherings and celebrations of holidays and special events. Her favorite saying when asked how she was doing was "better than nothing," among a few choice Italian words. For the last two years, Ma had been cared for by the loving and dedicated staff at Maine General Rehabilitation and Nursing Care at Glenridge in Augusta. Their professionalism and compassion for caring for those in their care has been remarkable, with several staff coming in on their day off to be with Ma on her final day here on Earth. Our family cannot express our thanks for the quality and kind care that you provided our mother over the last two years. We ask that anyone wanting to send flowers instead make a contribution to Maine General Rehabilitation and Nursing Care at Glenridge in Augusta, part of the Maine General Health, c/o Office of Philanthropy, P.O. Box 828, Waterville, ME 04903. A graveside memorial will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 23, at Mount Hope Cemetery in Augusta. The family will host an Italian feast at the family home at 506 Water St. in Gardiner following the service and invite Ma's friends to stop by. Arrangements are under the care of Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner. Earl Winfield CAREY Jr.-67864 and Genevieve "Jennie" CRISOSTAMO-67876 had the following children: |
