Sterling J. Carmody, 88, a 75-year resident of the Wenatchee Valley, passed away Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003. He was born Nov. 4, 1914, to James Carmody and Ruth (Nicholas) Carmody, in Syracuse, NE. In 1927, he moved with his family to Wenatchee from Grand Island, NE. In Wenatchee, Sterling received his primary education, and attended Business College. He worked in the meat cutting/Butcher business until 1942 when he enlisted in the Army. The above picture was taken while serving in the Army during 1942-1946. After proudly serving his country, he returned to the meat cutting/Butcher business and, also, became an Orchardist in Malaga. In 1969, he married Phyllis (Hutchens) Carmody, and they continued to live in Malaga. As a dedicated individual with strong work ethics, he derived much pleasure from working and continued to do so even after retiring from the orchard in 1977. He went on to work for the Malaga Market and Central Distributing, then retired in 1993. Sterling was a member of the Methodist Church, the Elks Lodge, and American Legion. He is remembered as a sincere and reserved person with a kind heart and soul who wanted to work forever. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Carmody; daughter and son-in-law, Judy Padilla and Len Padilla; grandchildren, Roxanne Padilla and Joe Padilla; daughter, Pam McGhee, and her husband and children, Jim McGhee, Christine Simonson, and Coral Anderson; sister, Dorothy (Carmody) Webb; brother, Monroe Carmody; and cousins, Jim and Dorothy Carmody. He was preceded in death by his parents and eldest brother, Kenneth Carmody. Graveside services will be held at the Evergreen Memorial Park, Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003 at 2 p.m. Visitation times are Monday, Jan. 13, 2003 from the hours of 12 - 5 p.m. and Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003 from the hours of 12 - 8 p.m. Arrangements are by Telford's Chapel of the Valley, East Wenatchee.
