The forepart of last week the people of this community were greatly surprised and shocked to learn of the death of Mrs. Edith Vandiver at her home near Gypsum, Kansas, following an operation for appendicitis. Edith E. Winslow, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. W. Winslow of Rotate township, was born Nov. 24th 1889 and in the community where her home was made until her marriage to Mr. Archie Vandiver, which was consumated on March 27th, 1911, which event was followed by the removal of the young couple to a farm near Gypsum where they resided at the time of her death, Dec. 22nd, 1913, her age being 24 years and 28 days. She was conscious to the last and expressed herself as ready and willing to go, her only regret being that she must leave the loved ones behind, but hoping to meet them all in that better land where there is no pain or sorrow and where no separation will ever be known. She leaves a husband, her parents, four brothers, seven sisters and innumerable friends to mourn the loss of one whose whole life has been characterized by unswerving love and unfailing cheerfulnesss. Funeral services were conducted at the M. E. church in this city at 2:30 P. M. on Friday, December 20th, by Rev. Chas. Williams whose text was taken from the 3rd verse of the 20th chapter of 1st Samuel, "There is but a step between me and death." Following the services interment was made in Grace cemetery, the attendance being unusually large considering the season and state of the weather. Again we have been called upon to pay our last respects to one who has been called home to that "House not made by hands" where a loving father waits to welcome His own and to our finite minds it seems especially sad as the deceased was just entering upon what promised to be an unusually happy and prosperous life but we know that which is loss to us is to her, gain, to us sorrow, to her, joy.
