Vernon Thomas Bentley was the only son of Charles Moore and Helena (Brown) Bentley. He was only 15 months old when his father was killed in a well drilling accident. His mother married 2) Henry Ringer Morris by whom she had three sons: Robert Theodore, Louis Charles, and Paul Eugene Moris. Vernon served in the U.S. Navy from 1925-1928. While visiting relatives in Oregon, he met and later married Esther Miller Meyer on 30 June 1933, in Roseburg, Douglas County, Oregon. Vernon and Esther Bentley were the parents of Thomas Henry Bentley, Mary Faith (Bentley) Forney, Charlene Louise (Bentley) McLain, and Dick Prentiss Bentley.
