RANGELEY -- Walter "Skeet" Davenport, 83, of Rangeley, Maine, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.He was born in Rangeley, on April 16, 1918, the son of Walter and Eva Davenport.He was a valiant and decorated soldier serving 26 years in the U.S. Army. He served in World War II with the 325th Glider Infantry of the 82nd Airborne Division, and fought in seven assaults including Sicily, the Invasion of Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, the Invasion of Holland, and the Ardennes. He was active in the U.S. Army Reserves and formed the Army Reserve Unit in Rangeley.A lifetime resident of Rangeley, Skeet served as tax assessor for 25 years and was the Building Inspector and Code Enforcement Officer for 10 years. He served on the Board of Selectmen including three years as Chairman, was a member of the Planning Board and served as President of the Rangeley Lakes Historical Society. He was a caring family man and strong supporter of young people in the community, maintaining an ever-present Maine sense of humor.Skeet cherished and fought for the protection of his native region as a registered Maine Guide for 55 years. He was an avid fly fisherman, trapper and hunter. He managed Grant's Kennebago Camps on Kennebago Lake for 20 years, and always caught the fish no one else could.He is survived and missed by his wife, Margaret; his son, Walter Davenport of Rangeley; and his daughters, Karyl and Melissa Davenport both of Boston, Mass.; his sisters, June Plummer, Sarah Davenport, Arlene Rich, Carlene Miller and Eleanor Guevremont and their families all of Rangeley; and the families of his deceased brothers and sister, William and Richard Davenport and Elizabeth Wilson.A gathering to remember Skeet Davenport was held at the Church of the Good Shepherd on Main Street in Rangeley, on Friday, Jan. 25, 2002.Graveside services will be held in early June.Friends wishing to may make donations in his memory to the Rangeley Historical Society, Main Street, Rangeley, Maine 04970.
