Army veteran; longtime Hollis resident

John Leland Taylor, 89, of Runnell's Bridge Road, Hollis, died June 6, 2003, at his home surrounded by his family.

Mr. Taylor was born July 7, 1913, in Eustis, Maine, son of the late Everett B. and Amy M. (Wilbur) Taylor. He was a resident of Hollis for the past 56 years.

He was married to Catherine M. (Mullane) Taylor of New Zealand in St. Joseph Church at Mission Bay at Orakei, New Zealand, June 3, 1944. They observed their 59th wedding anniversary Tuesday.

Mr. Taylor had been employed with Improved Paper Machinery Co. in Nashua as a pattern manager for 33 years before retiring in 1978.

He served on the first board of directors of IMPCO, served many years as chairman of the credit committee for the IMPCO Credit Union, was a member of the board of directors of IMPCO Retirees and was a member of the Diamond Club. He was an institutional representative for a Boy Scout and Cub Scout troop, and for many years he was manager of the Red Sox Little League baseball team in Hollis.

Mr. Taylor was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the New England National Guard that was federalized in 1941. He served with the 152nd Field Artillery Battalion of the 43rd Infantry division in the South Pacific Theater, including Guadalcanal, Russell Islands, New Guinea and Luzon of the Philippine Islands. He held the rank of staff sergeant and was discharged in 1945.

He was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Nashua, serving as a member of the board of deacons and on the church council. In 1990, he received the "Man of the Year" award from the Men's Fellowship of the church.

Mr. Taylor was a graduate of Rangely High School and Farmington State Normal School of Maine in 1932.

He was predeceased by his twin brother, Gerry Taylor, in 1984.

Besides his wife, survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, James E. and Lois A. Taylor of Hollis; a daughter and son-in-law, Maggie and John Coyle of Olde Town [Old Town, Bonner Co.] Idaho; four granddaughters, Catherine and Christine Coyle and Amy and Sara Taylor of Hollis; a sister-in-law, Geraldine Donovan of Wiakanae, New Zealand; and several nieces and nephews in New Zealand.

A graveside service was held June 10 at Evergreen Cemetery in Rangeley, Maine.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church, 121 Manchester St., Nashua, NH 03064; or to a charity of one's choice.

The Farwell Funeral Service in Nashua was in charge of arrangements.
