13281. Henry Darrow BEEDE was born on 10 May 1858 in Youngstown, Mahoning, Ohio.⁷⁸ He died on 6 March 1932 at the age of 73 in Massillon, Stark, Ohio.⁷⁸ Buried in Boardman Cemetery. Henry was a Master Mechanic/Engineer. He helped install a new mill for Cartwright-McCurdy and also worked for Carnegie Steel Co., Greenville, PA. Henry and Paulina lived from Dec 1889 to Dec. 1890 in Pomeroy, Meigs Co., OH while he completed work on a new mill. He was a carpenter, construction foreman and staircase builder, specializing in circular staircases.

He owned a home on West Belive in Boardman. It had a barn, orchard, strawberry and raspberry patches, garden, dug well and a spring on a hillside (now in Mill Creek Park). Uncle Date's daughter, Margaret, remembered with fondness, the family reunions held at Uncle Henry's and Aunt Polly's farm, with the picnic tables in the orchard and also remembered walking down the hill to a spring and drinking water there. Henry built new home south of this place, and he and Eli Weaver, Ruth's father, built a large Dutch Colonial home for his son, Paul, there also. Part of this land was sold to Mill Creek Park and three lots were saved for himself, Paul and a daughter, Bess.

A story noted on a scrap of paper by Paul Beede tells of a happening in Pomeroy, Ohio. While watching with excitement the riverboats landing there, Little Willy, then about age three, announced, "Here comes the 'Valley Belle'!". Willy's little sisters, Minnie and Bessie, boarded the salt boat without permission or knowledge of their parents. The 'Valley Belle' started to pull out when they were discovered on board, forcing the boat to back up and put little Minnie and Bessie off.

Paulina Agatha was the daughter of John Jacob & Rebecca Lipp Reiter. Her mother, Rebecca, arrived in the United States with her parents and brothers and sisters in 1831. She was six years old, having been born in 1826 in Wurtemburg, Germany. Rebecca's spinning wheel and basket of flax was passed from Paulina to Ruth Beede and then to Michelle Beede Moore.

Virginia Beede remembered getting scolded for mimicking "Polly" (Paulina) as she called "Hen" home for supper when he worked long hours at their new home being built next door. Paulina had to put up with Hen's drinking problem and, as he aged, he became more unruly. There is no family Bible because Henry threw it into the parlor coal stove. Polly rescued it but it was ruined too badly to save. She gave it a fitting burial in the vegetable garden. It is said that Henry took after Polly with a hot poker from the stove and that she had to lock him in the small back bedroom for safety. This pattern must have led to the eventual trip to Massillion Hospital.

Henry Darrow BEEDE and Paulina Agatha "Polly" REITER were married on 24 October 1880 in Mount Jackson, Lawrence, Pennsylvania.⁷⁸ Paulina Agatha "Polly" REITER was born on 24 January 1858 in Petersburg, Mahoning, Ohio.⁷⁸ She died on 29 May 1937 at the age of 79 in Boardman Township, Mahoning, Ohio.³³¹⁸ She is buried in Boardman Cemetery there.
