South Berwick, Maine - Herbert J. Philbrick, 88, of Vine Street and formerly of Elm Street, Newmarket, NH died April 20, 2009 at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, Dover.

Born May 21, 1920, he was the son of Herbert G. and Edna (Pariseau) Philbrick. After graduating from Newmarket High School in 1938, he worked at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard before working for Public Service Electric Company of New Hampshire for 33 years. He was a member of the Newmarket Fire Department (1938-2002) and the Robert G. Durgin American Legion Post #67 in Newmarket.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the Navy as an Aircraft Radar man, third class, and was a "plank owner" of the aircraft carrier Bonhomme Richard.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Elizabeth "Betty" (Carmichael) Philbrick who died May 24, 1996; a brother Leonard Philbrick; and a sister Doris Mullen.

Survivors include his wife, Henrietta "Penny" Beaulieu Philbrick of South Berwick, ME; 6 children, Sally Bohan of Pembroke, MA, Susan "Candy" Bailey of Gonic, Margaret Ramey of Newport, RI, Thomas Philbrick of Newtown, CT, Brad Philbrick of Richmond, RI and Bethia Philbrick of South Berwick, ME; 20 Grandchildren; 8 Great Grandchildren; a brother, Richard Philbrick of Niskayuna, NY; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

There will be no calling hours.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Durham Evangelical Church, 114 Dover Rd., Durham, NH on Sunday, April 26, at 3:00 p.m.
