FAIRFIELD -- Lloyd "Butch" Burgess Jr., of Fairfield, passed away at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Thayer Unit in Waterville, on Friday evening, Jan. 9, 2009.

Butch was born to Lloyd D. Sr. and Helen (Philbrick) Burgess, in Waterville, on Oct. 15, 1946. He was a 1964 graduate of Waterville Senior High School.

While a student at Waterville High School, Butch spent four years on the Student Council and was a member of the EMAC Club. He served in the Army Reserve at Ft. Dix, N.J., from 1966 to 1972. Butch built and ran a pizza shop at his parents' store, Corner Market, in Belgrade. He was employed as an auto body technician and then opened his own auto body shop called Auto Specialty in Waterville, then later moved the business to Oakland. He owned and operated Auto Specialty for nearly two decades.

Butch most enjoyed the time he spent with his wife, children and grandchildren and was known by all to be a proud and dedicated family man. Watching his grandchildren at their special events and sporting activities gave him great pleasure. The greatest love of his life, besides his family, was stock car racing. A second-generation driver, Butch began his racing career in 1969 at Unity Raceway where he later won three track championships in 1971, 1977 and 1988. He was voted most popular driver by his many fans and was a founding member and president of the Central Maine Racing Association in the late 1980s. Butch raced at several tracks around the state during his 24-year career. In 1997, he realized his lifelong dream of owning a race car shop with his son Jeff. Butch was highly respected for his knowledge of race car technology and loved to share what he knew with anyone who was eager to learn.

Butch will be greatly missed by his adoring family. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 42 years, Barbara Jean Atkinson Burgess, of Fairfield, and his three children, daughters Stephanie Burgess and Jennifer Robbins, of Oakland, and his son, Jeffrey Burgess and his companion, Nya Clement, of East Madison. He was the extremely proud grandparent of Bailey Burgess and Cody and Chelsea Robbins, all of Oakland. Butch was greatly anticipating the birth of his fourth grandchild in June, to Jeff and Nya. Butch greatly treasured the time he spent with extended family member Peter Silva, of Leicester, N.C. He also held special affection for Kim Clement Burgess, of Oakland.

He leaves behind five siblings, Joy Dow and her husband, Don, of Belgrade, Gail Gallagher and her husband, Herb, of Fairfield, Gene Burgess and his wife, Cathy, of Belgrade and Florida, Leon Burgess and his companion, Sandra Macomber, of West Gardiner, and Chris Burgess and his companion, Darlene Spiller, of Belgrade. He is also survived by aunts Lucille Burgess Belanger and her husband, Arthur, of Waterville, and Armande Burgess, of Oakland; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by both parents, who were residents of Belgrade.

A celebration of Butch's life will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, at the Poulin-Turner Hall on your left, on U.S. Route 201, Waterville Road, just 3.2 miles after Sappi heading toward Skowhegan. Refreshments will be served. From Interstate 95 take Exit 133, at the end of the ramp head north, onto U.S. Route 201 and go 10.5 miles toward Skowhegan. All friends, new and old, as well as family members are invited to attend the celebration.

At Lloyd's request, there will be no funeral or graveside service.
