CONCORD – John E. Philbrick, Sr., 76, of Concord, and formerly of Berwick, ME, died on Friday February 7, 2003 following a sudden and brief illness. He was born in Laconia, NH on May 13, 1926, a son of Arthur E. and Stella M. (Hickok) Philbrick. He attended schools in Meredith, NH and Laconia, NH and graduated from Laconia High school in 1944. John attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology, served in the Army Air Corps, and later received his Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of New Hampshire. He worked as an electrical engineer at General Electric in Somersworth, NH and retired after nearly 40 years of service. John served actively in the community as a scoutmaster, volunteer firefighter, school board member, and was involved in the Berwick Historical Society and researched many historical sites. He also played an integral part of the First Parish-U.C.C. in Somersworth and served in many different capacities including as a member of the Board of Trustees. His varied interests included HAM Radio, astronomy, world travel and genealogy. John was an avid athlete and pursued mountain climbing, skiing and running, having completed the Boston Marathon several times. He is predeceased by his youngest son, Peter B. Philbrick in June 2002. John is survived by his wife of 52 years Clara Louise (Berry) of Concord; four sons, Stephen W. of Baldwin, MD, Robert E. of South Berwick, ME, Carl F. of Windsor Locks, CT, and John Jr. of Shapleigh, ME; one daughter Kathleen Griffin of Encinitas, CA; seven grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 PM Monday February 10, 2003 at the Laing-Bibber Funeral Chapel, 36 Rochester Street, Berwick, ME. A funeral service will be held at 10 AM on Tuesday February 11, 2003 at the First Parish-U.C.C., 176 West High Street, Somersworth, NH with the Rev. Mark Rideout officiating. Burial will follow at 2 PM at the Meredith Village Cemetery in Meredith, NH. Clara was born in Wolfeboro on May 27, 1923, the daughter of Albert O. and Edith W. Berry. Her mother died four days later. Known as Louise to her family, she was raised primarily by her foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry W. Emerson of Laconia, and graduated from Laconia High School. As a young girl she spent summers with her two brothers, Al and Francis and their father on his farm. She graduated from the three-year diploma program at Margaret Pillsbury Hospital in Concord as a registered nurse, and took continuing education courses to keep her nursing license active until her retirement. After her marriage to John, he and Clara raised their family of five sons and a daughter in Berwick. Clara served actively in the community as a Cub Scout den mother and as a substitute nurse at Berwick schools, General Electric, and Prime Tanning. She was often known as the "neighborhood nurse" on Pine Hill and was an avid supporter of the Berwick Library Association. For four decades she hosted the weekly Wednesday Morning Coffeebreakers, an informal group of friends and neighbors, in her home. She was also very active in the First Parish-U.C.C. in Somersworth and served in many different capacities including as a Sunday school teacher, in Women's Fellowship and as a deacon. She had great faith that God was the strength and guide in her life. Clara was a wonderful friend to many and had a great sense of humor. Clara was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, John E. Philbrick Sr. in 2003 and their youngest son, Peter B. Philbrick, in 2002. Clara is survived by four sons, Stephen W. of Canton, Conn., Robert E. of South Berwick, Maine, Carl F. of Windsor Locks, Conn., and John Jr. of North Berwick, Maine; one daughter, Kathleen Griffin of Encinitas, Calif. Clara was the proud grandmother of seven grandchildren and had several nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, April 19, at Laing-Bibber Funeral Chapel, 36 Rochester St., Berwick, Maine. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 20, at the First Parish-United Church of Christ, 176 West High St., Somersworth, N.H., with the Rev. Mark Rideout officiating.
