Richard B. Philbrick, 85, of Silver Spring, Md., died January 25, 2006, at the Renaissance Gardens Nursing Home at Riderwood Village in Silver Spring.

Born in Salem, son of the late Burton and Ethel (Holt) Philbrick, he was a graduate of Phillips Academy in Andover in 1937, the University of Chicago and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y.

Mr. Philbrick served in the Merchant Marines during World War II, earning his master's license.

He went to work as a reporter at the old City News Service in Chicago in 1947 and three years later was hired by the Chicago Tribune. He was a former president of the Religion Newswriters Association from 1960 to 1962. The association in 2003 gave Mr. Philbrick its lifetime achievement award, calling him "a pioneer in the field." He edited several religious newsletters and volunteered for many years with the Smithsonian Institution's Hall of American Maritime Enterprise.

Mr. Philbrick is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ruth Rowe Philbrick; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Burton S. Philbrick.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 3 at 11 a.m. from the Lee, Moody & Russell Funeral Home, 9 Dane St., Beverly.
