Hiram was born in present-day Wyoming County, NY. When he was about 18 years old he moved with his family to Racine County, Wisconsin. He and his wife moved to Macomb County, Michigan in 1848. He settled on section 3, Ray township, and lived there until 1866, except for 2 years in Wisconsin and time spent in the army during the Civil War. On Aug. 13, 1861 he enlisted in the Ninth Michigan Infantry Regiment, and was elected Second Lieutenant in December 1861. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on October 13, 1862. The regiment fought in 12 battles, and Hiram took part in all but one of them. He was wounded in action and taken prisoner at Murfreesboro, Tennessee July 13, 1862, exchanged on August 27, and made Captain on October 13 of the same year. He was mustered out of the army on November 23, 1864. After the war he bought up land in the northwest quarter of Armada. Soon after the death of his wife in June, 1866, he started construction on a home on a corner lot in Armada. That house still stands (1991) at the corner of Tietz and Barrows Streets. He also sold off building lots in the subdivision surrounding his house. In 1868 he and Dr. John S. Smith built the first brick block in the village of Armada, later known as the "Barrows Block". On Sept. 19, 1868, the nearly completed walls fell, killing Dr. Smith. After a period of mourning, Hiram Barrows had the building completed. Then he opened a general merchandise store in the block. In 1875 he and Cyrus Farrar started a business making cheese. Barrows soon bought out Farrar, who moved to Saginaw. Hiram was elected Justice of the Peace three times, and also served as town Supervisor and Postmaster. In 1849 he was elected Deacon of the Congregational Church in Armada, and soon after became Superintendent of the Sunday School. He filled both those positions until his death. He was very active in the temperance movement.
