He served in the Civil War . He served first with the 2nd Maine Infantry, having enlisted in October, 1861, and then with the 20th Maine Infantry. The 2nd Maine was a 2 year unit; James, however, had enlisted for 3 years and therefore was transferred to the 20th Maine to complete his service when the 2nd Maine was mustered out in mid-1863. He must have signed on for an additional year since he was not mustered out until July,1865. Due to his being hospitalized he reportedly did not participate in the Battle of Gettysburg with the 20th Maine.
