A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill of Holy Family Catholic Church officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and one hour before the service. A scriptural prayer service will be held at 5:30 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the Velma L. Callander Memorial Fund. Velma was born July 16, 1915, west of Kearney, Neb., the daughter of John and Francis (Brisbain) Collins. She attended school in Fort Dodge and then moved to Omaha and Oregon. Velma returned to Fort Dodge and was then united in marriage to John Robert Peter Callander on Sept. 15, 1958, in Blue Earth, Minn. They moved to Mason City in May 1959, where Velma was primarily a homemaker. She also worked for several years at the Brat House and Key Rexall Drug in Mason City. Velma enjoyed shopping, word puzzles, playing cards, crocheting and spending time with her grandkids. She also took great pride in her flower garden and evergreen trees, and in her cooking, especially her "million dollar fudge." She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. Velma is survived by her husband, John, of Mason City; five children, Sondra Jean Hebert of Fort Dodge, Robert Harvey Knowles and his wife, Twila, of Fort Dodge, Sheila Ann Infante and her husband, Albert Sr., of Mason City, Sonia Rae Jones of Manly, and Martha Louisa Beeman of Omaha, Neb.; 20 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Francis Lorraine Kearney; two brothers, Jack and Glen; and one sister, Genevieve. Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, (641) 423-2372.
