Genie May Garfield died 20 April 2004 at Bear Creek Respite Care Center in Bozeman. She was 82. She was born in Forsyth 28 June 1921, only child of Malcolm (Mac) and Edith May Cox (May) Philbrick. She attended 1st grade in Forsyth where she lived with her Aunt and Uncle Fred and Wana Cox. Her mother May started the Philbrick school on the Rosebud so she could come home. In 1940 she moved to Northfield, Minnesota; 1941 to Spokane, Washington, 1942 to Salt Lake City, Utah, and later returned to Spokane. She was Secretary in Civil Service. On 11 May 1943 she married Major Russell Merrit Garfield at Fort George Wright in Spokane. He received orders for overseas duty during WWII and she went to Hinsdale, New Hampshire with her sister-in-law for a while, returning to the ranch on the Rosebud during the war. Mr. Garfield was discharged in 1945 and they moved to Hinsdale, New Hampshire where he was manager of Ashuelot Paper Company. In 1952 their only daughter Debra Jane was born. They spent nearly 30 years in New England. She maintained an active role in her father's ranch and returned to the Diamond Ranch nearly every summer. In 1973, he retired and they returned to Montana to take over the operation of the Diamond Ranch following her father's death. Mr. Garfield died in 1982. She remained on the Diamond Ranch until 2001 when her health required her to move closer to her daughter and family, grandson Tyler. She is survived by her daughter Debby and husband Jim Bangs of Bozeman; her grandson Tyler of Bozeman; her sister-in-law Shirley and husband George Hanna of Keen, New Hampshire; brother-in-law Dr. John Worden of Brattleboro, Vermont. She was predeceased by her husband and parents. Burial will be at Lee Cemetery, Forsyth. She was buried at Lee Cemetery in Rosebud County, Montana.2767 Bear Creek Respite Care Center.
