JOAN (PHILBRICK) THORNTON LETARTE ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Joan (Philbrick) Thornton LeTarte, 79, wife of Col. Grosvenor LeTarte II, U.S. Air Force, retired, died Sept. 3, 2008, in Alexandria, Va., after a long illness. Joan was born July 12, 1929, in Fort Fairfield, the daughter of Freeman J. and Jessie L. (Fawcett) Philbrick. Joan was brought up on her family's farm on East Limestone Road, Fort Fairfield; as well as at the family's winter home in the village of Fort Fairfield. She was the youngest child and the only girl among four brothers. She attended Fort Fairfield schools and graduated from Fort Fairfield High School, Class of 1948. She was chosen Winter Carnival Queen in 1947 during her town's annual winter carnival. Joan was married to Thomas Reed Thornton of Fort Fairfield in 1950. She and Tom moved to a small farm on Dorsey Road, where she easily assumed the duties of a farmer's wife and mother. Their son, Philip Thornton, was born during this time. The marriage ended in divorce. In 1956, she married Grosvenor LeTarte II of Fort Fairfield, a captain in the U.S. Air Force, stationed at Presque Isle Air Force Base. They made their first home in Presque Isle for a time, but soon began traveling extensively as a military family to other countries such as Turkey, Thailand and Germany. A second son was born to them, Grosvenor LeTarte III. Joan was a wonderful wife and mother. She loved to cook, sew, garden, and always established a warm and comfortable home for her family, whether in a foreign country or in the USA. She cherished her husband and boys, as well as her mother, Jessie, writing to her faithfully once a week or more while she was away. Between Grove's assignments, she eagerly came back to visit her mother and brothers. Upon his retirement, they settled in Alexandria, Va. Joan is survived by her husband, Col. Grovesnor LeTarte II, U.S. Air Force, retired, of Alexandria, Va; two sons, Lt. Col. Philip Thornton, U.S. Air Force, retired, and his wife, Denise, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Grosvenor LeTarte III of Alexandria, Va.; a granddaughter, Tracy Jane Thornton of Colorado; a brother, Henry J. Philbrick of Ocala, Fla.; and two sisters-in-law, Betty N. Philbrick and Edwena Philbrick Gagnon of Fort Fairfield. Joan was predeceased by her parents, Freeman J. and Jessie L. Philbrick; an infant sister, Agnes Louise; three brothers, Frederick F., George M. and John C. Philbrick; many nieces, nephews and cousins. There were no calling hours. Arrangements for her burial are being made at Arlington National Cemetery in the care of Cunningham Funeral Home, 811 Cameron St., Alexandria, Va.
