Sixth Generation
976. Rebecca HICKS550 was born between 1734 and 1842 in .347 She died before 9 February 1795 at the age of 61 in North Carolina.347 Died before 9 Feb 1795, established by the sale of MINGO, a slave given to her by her father Thomas Hicks, who was sold Feb 9 1795, Duplin Co. Deeds Book 3A, #144 by son Leonard Mills. The slave Mingo was left to Leonard at his mother Rebecca's death.
Rebecca HICKS and James MILLS were married about 1760 in Duplin County, North Carolina.347 James MILLS551 was born between 1733 and 1740 in . He died in 1795 at the age of 62 in New Hanover County, North Carolina. James Mills apparently secured land in Duplin County, North Carolina about 1766, when he purchased 100 acres on Limestone Creek. The purchase was witnessed by James Morris, John Bishop and Robert Southerland. In 1668 he purchased an additional 200 acres on Limestone Creek from Thomas Hicks. There are additional records of land purchases in Duplin County, NC.There are at least two James Mills who participated in the Revolutionary War. In the Roster of Soldiers from North Carolina in the Revolution, there is a James Mills that was a lieutenant in the 8th North Carolina Regiment on November 28, 1776. He was transferred to the 1st Regiment in June 1778, and appears to have been a Captain in the 10th Regiment by 1779. He was reported to have been killed in a skirmish in March of 1781 pg42). Apparently this is incorrect, unless a descendant claiumed land on his behalf, as on page 243, James Mills, Captain, received 3,840 acres of land for 84 months, or seven years, service, in October 1783. There is also a notatiuon of accounts paid to Captain James Mills in 1783 (pg 189). The other James Mills noted on page 147, joined the Milita in June of 1779, and was mustered out, or "Deranged" January 1, 1783. His time of service would only have been three and a half years. Which one of these is our James Mills?? Judge Folks Huxford in his "Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia" Vol IV, page 346, concerning the descendants of James Mills, who settled in Georgia, gives his complete name as Captain James Mills, RS. Throughout the minutes of Duplin County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions, 1784-1787, James Mills is mentioned many times: Juryman (21 Oct 1784), fined 18 April 1787 for not attending as Juryman, Grand Jury 18 Apr 1785, ordered as Juryman on committee to lay off a road 17 April 1785, Juryman of Court 16 Jan 1786, witness of receipt for administration of estate of Isom Shuffiels. Deed filed 18 July 1787 for 100 acres of land sold to William Hall In Duplin County, NC Court of Pleas, 18 July 1785, James Mills exhibited & proved inventory of estate of Thankful (Weeks) Mills. Rebecca HICKS-31815 and James MILLS-31816 had the following children: +2047 | i. | Hicks MILLS-31817. | +2048 | ii. | Thankful MILLS-31818. | 2049 | iii. | Leonard MILLS347 was born about 1766 in . He died between 1810 and 1813 at the age of 44. Will of Thomas Hicks written in 1775 - he listed as a child of Rebecca, their only daughter. Believe Leonard Mills married Catron (Carlton or Catherine) Hodgeson/Hutcheson, daughter of Aaron and Ann Hodgeson/Hutcheson of Duplin Co., NC. Within the microfilm for the will of Aaron, the name looks like Cattron. | 2050 | iv. | Beulah "(Bowler, Bomler)" MILLS552 was born about 1768 in . She was living in 1785. Name also found listed as Bomler. In " Colonial Granville County and It's People" by Worth S. Ray, the name is interpreted as Beulah. Mr. Phillip Mills, of North Carolina, who has been doing research on the Mills family, has indicated that within the family of his ancestor, Leonard Mills, there were daughters named Bowler or Bowley, which may indicate that this name actually was Bowler rather than Beulah.
| 2051 | v. | Rebekah MILLS553 was born about 1768 in Duplin County, North Carolina. | 2052 | vi. | Elizabeth "Betty" MILLS554 was born about 1770 in . | 2053 | vii. | Serena "Lorena" MILLS555 was born about 1771 in . She was living in 1830. In the will of Thomas Hicks, he lists what appears to be Lorena as a granddaughter. S and Ls hard to distinguish in old handwriting. Her name has also been interpreted as Serena Mills. Since there are several Serenas in the family, I would opt for that name.
| 2054 | viii. | Anna MILLS556 was born about 1774 in . She was living in 1821 in Smith County, Mississippi. She died in Smith County, Mississippi. | 2055 | ix. | Sarah MILLS557 was born about 1775 in Abbeville, Duplin, North Carolina. She appeared in the census in 1850 in Emanuel County, Georgia.558 She was buried in Adrian, Emanuel, Georgia. Age determined from 1850 Census for Emanuel Co., GA, Film # 007064, p. 1841. Sarah appeared in her grandfather's will, which was written in 1775, so she would have been born no later than that date. The later census record indicates that she was born in 1780, but as you know, census records are not always correct. The fact that John Hodgeson is receiving payment from the will of Thomas Hicks would indicate that Sarah was his wife. John's surname appears to have originally been Hodgeson. Somewhere along the line it was corrupted to Hutcheson/Hutchison/Hutchinson.
| 2056 | x. | Frederick MILLS347 was born about 1775 in North Carolina. | 2057 | xi. | Mary MILLS559 was born about 1778 in . She died about 1797 at the age of 19. Listed as an heir in the will of Thankful Hicks but not Thomas Hicks, so born between 1775 and 1784.
| 2058 | xii. | James MILLS560 was born between 1780 and 1784 in Duplin County, North Carolina. | 2059 | xiii. | Shadrack MILLS561 was born between 1781 and 1784 in Duplin County, North Carolina. He died in Dale County, Alabama. Awarded a lot in 1805 Land Lottery, Effingham County, GA
| 2060 | xiv. | Frederick Jackson MILLS562 was born about 1782 in . He died on 10 August 1850 at the age of 68. He was buried at Union Hill Cemetery in Axson, Atkinson, Georgia. | 2061 | xv. | Dorothy MILLS562 was born about 1786 in North Carolina. Not listed in grandmothers will, but an extra female child is noted in the 1786 Census for Duplin County. Most likely Dorothy. She is listed in her father's will, probated in New Hanover Co., NC, Sept. Term 1795. Found in Film #0019361, Bk. C., pg. 283.
