PORTLAND - Donald Lockey Philbrick died peacefully on Monday, Sept. 12, 2005 at Piper Shores, Scarborough, after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Portland, May 3,1923, a son of Donald Ward and Ruth Lockey Philbrick, attended Cape Elizabeth schools and graduated Tom Cape Elizabeth High School in 1940; Bowdoin College, A.B. cum laude, 1944 and Harvard Law School, J.D. 1948.

While at Bowdoin, Donald enlisted in the Army reserve in November of 1942 and was called to active duty in the European Theater of Operations in March of 1943, serving as an interpreter (German) with the 95th Infantry Division in England, France and Germany. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in Germany on Dec. 24, 1944. In 1951, he was commissioned as an officer in the Maine Air National Guard and served on active duty for two years in Libya.

Following his graduation from law school, Donald joined the firm now known as Verrill and Dana, and was engaged in private practice there and subsequently on his own from 1948 until his retirement in August of 2000, specializing in real estate and probate law.

He was a member of the Cumberland County, Maine State and American Bar Associations and former president of the Maine State Bar Association Mutual Title Insurance Company.

Donald had a passion for family, genealogy, history and land use, and enjoyed playing bridge. He was a selectman and town meeting moderator for the Town of Cape Elizabeth; a member of the Maine Historical Society (past president); New England Historic Genealogical Society (past vice-president); National Guard Association of the United States; The Retired Officers Association; The Cape Elizabeth Land Trust; and the Fraternity Club, a literary club.

In 1982, Donald was married to Janet Mitchell Poole, who survives him. Since 1991, Donald and Janet have lived at Piper Shores in Scarborough, where they enjoyed the ocean view and many interesting friends.

He also leaves two daughters, Deborah P. Peiser of Rochester, N.H., and Sarah P. Shick of West Orange, N.J.; three sons, Paul S. of Boca Raton, Fla., Mark. W. of Seattle, Wash., and Andrew H. of Princeton, N.J.; a stepdaughter, Dr. Lindsay M. Johnson of Santa Cruz, Calif.; two stepsons, Robert W. Poole of Beijing, China, and David Poole of Portland; a sister, Jean P. (Mrs. Cushing) Strout of Ithaca, N.Y.; a brother, John W. Philbrick of Portland; four grandchildren, Daniel and Benjamin Philbrick of Cape Elizabeth, Samuel Peiser of Rochester, N.H., William Shick of West Orange, N.J., and Elyse Shahfer of Redford, Mich.; and four stepgrandchildren, Henry Johnson of Santa Cruz, Calif., and Logan, Sarah and Nina Poole of Chicago, Ill.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, Sept.16, at State Street Congregational Church at 11 a.m.

SCARBOROUGH -- Janet Mitchell Philbrick of Piper Shores, Scarborough, died suddenly on March 30, 2008.

The daughter of William A. Mitchell and Georgie Brown Mitchell, Janet was born on Aug. 28, 1927, in New Jersey. She was the widow of Donald Philbrick of Portland. She attended Abbot Academy, now Phillips Andover Academy in Connecticut, and graduated from Smith College in the class of 1949. She also had a graduate degree in Occupational Therapy from Columbia University. Janet was very successful in her work for many years as an Occupational Therapist at the Cerebral Palsy Center in Portland, where she was able to help innumerable children and adults. Janet was first married and divorced from Burnell Poole Jr. Her son Burnell Poole III, predeceased her as did her sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Gort. She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Lindsay Johnson of Santa Cruz, Calif., her son, Robert Poole of Beijing, China, and her son David Poole, of Portland. Her brother, David L. Mitchell of New York City, survives her; as well as her three granddaughters, Logan, Sally and Nina Poole of Chicago, and her grandson, Henry Johnson of Santa Cruz.

Janet took up study of the trumpet in recent years, and sometimes performed with her son David in jazz performances. In addition to her past work as a docent in the Portland Museum of Art, Janet did considerable volunteer work in the Portland area, particularly for the mental health community.

A memorial service will be held for Janet 11 a.m. Saturday, April 5, 2008, at the State Street Church in Portland, officiated by the Rev. Jeannette A. Good. A reception will follow the service at Piper Shores. Arrangements made by the Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Rd., South Portland.
