Lake San Marcos, Ca - Roma Philbrook Rentz, 100, passed away May 21, 2010. She was born December 6, 1909 to James A. Robeson and Blanche Maughmer in Liberty, Missouri. She always said she was the last surviving offspring of James and Blanche and as she likes to say, "the last fallen leaf from the tree". The Maughmer Family originally migrated to the United States in the 1800's. Roma graduated in 1947 summa cum laude obtaining a Hospital Administration and Business Management degree from Northwestern University in Chicago, IL. In 1949 she became the Manager of Asilomar Conference Grounds in Pacific Grove, CA, continuing in that position for 28 years. She has always considered that period the most important part of her life. Her meticulous management involved work on a $9 million Master Plan for the center solely funded from operating funds. She also developed the William Penn Mott, Jr. Training Center for training the California Parks and Recreation employees. Asilomar Conference Grounds was initially a non-profit facility recognized and used for scientific, religious and other meetings. When the need arose, she also overlooked a major expansion of the facility that included extensive dining and sleeping facilities. Throughout the years Asilomar was the recipient of many prestigious awards as well as landscape and architectural honors. Her work was so treasured and well done she became known as "Lady Asilomar" and throughout the years she received many personal accolades, among them the California Golden Bear Award and in 1976 she was named Monterey Peninsula Woman of the Year. On July 1, 1956 she administered the transfer of Asilomar to the California State's Division of Parks and Beaches. She was listed in Who's Who of American Women in the 1975-76 edition. In 1988 on the occasion of the celebration of Asilomar's 75th Anniversary, Roma was honored to be chosen as keynote speaker by providing a brief summary of Asilomar's history and humble beginnings. After retiring in 1977 she moved to Lake San Marcos and in 1979 she renewed an old friendship with Col. Robert J. Rentz, an Air Force pilot and an early pioneer American Airlines pilot and a recipient of the American Airlines Award of Merit, who had retired after 32 years with American Airlines. Mr. Rentz was a member of the Kelly Field Flying class of 1924, which included Charles Lindberg. Roma and Bob were married in 1979. Bob passed away in 1985. Her vacations were spent traveling the world and seeing the diversity and beauty of the natural world as well as its startling losses. Seeing those losses and her work at Asilomar sparked her interest in conservation. Mrs. Rentz supported many national and international conservation organizations, including The Nature Conservancy, World Wildlife Fund, Save the Redwoods, Friends of the Sea Otter and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. In 1978 she began a 19-year relationship as a volunteer for Anza-Borrego Foundation, a non-profit organization, chairing several committees as well as holding the position of Vice President. For most of her tenure her major role was heading the Acquisitions Committee. It necessitated planning many complex transactions to secure privately owned parcels located within the boundary of the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park¨ for ultimate inclusion into the California State Park system. In March 1996 during the California State Park Rangers Association's banquet held in Ventura, CA, she received recognition as Honorary Ranger for her Asilomar and Anza-Borrego Foundation contributions. A passionate opera devotee she supported the Centennial Fund of the Metropolitan Opera Company and the San Diego Opera Endowment Foundation. She was treasurer of the Rancho Santa Fe Opera Guild of the San Diego Opera Company and a member of the Opera Ring. Roma's instructions for her interment were Fort Rosecrans next to her late husband, Bob Rentz. In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that donations be made to The Nature Conservancy, Newport Beach, CA. or Anza-Borrego Foundation, Borrego Springs, CA.
