VINALHAVEN -- Ernest H. Warren, 51, died unexpectedly at his home Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010. Born in Vinalhaven, Nov. 1, 1958, he was the son of Herbert A. and Mary Philbrook Warren. Ernie attended Vinalhaven schools and, at age 17, enlisted in the service of the Navy. His service included duty in Pensacola, Fla., and Cuba.

After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Ernie returned to Vinalhaven.

He later moved to Fayette, where he resided for more than 10 years. While living there, Ernie captained the fishing vessel "Isabel J" out of Portland. In May 1995, while fishing 100 miles off Massachusetts, that vessel caught fire and sank. Miraculously, the fire was spotted by a commercial aircraft on its approach to Boston. The pilot of that aircraft notified the U.S. Coast Guard, who fortuitously already had a helicopter on a mission in close proximity. That helicopter immediately responded and hoisted Ernie and his three crew members to safety.

Since that time, Ernie had worked as a lobsterman out of Vinalhaven, aboard his aptly named vessel, "Risky Business."

Ernie enjoyed traveling, whether vacationing with his family and friends during the winter months, or driving to Florida with his buddies or fishing trips to Alaska. He also enjoyed attending his son's baseball games.

He was predeceased by his parents.

Ernie is survived by his soulmate and companion of more than 30 years, Linda Lapointe, and his son, Ethan E. Warren, both of Vinalhaven; his daughter, Natalie Allen and her husband, Patrick, of Wiscasset; a brother, Dennis Warren and his wife, Melissa; three sisters, Sharon Philbrook and her husband, Robert, Donna Warren, and Susie Pitts and her husband, Randy, all of Vinalhaven; his companion's parents, whom he considered as his own, Normand and Theresa Lapointe, of Augusta; two grandchildren, Liam and Eve Allen; as well as several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A graveside service, to be held at Browns Head Cemetery, will be announced in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Vinalhaven Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 815, Vinalhaven, ME 04863.

Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St., Rockland.
