SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Russell Philbrick, 86, died at his home Sunday, Nov. 16, 2008, after a long battle with cancer. Natalie (Tally), his wife of 64 years, was at his bedside. Russell was born Oct. 9, 1922, in York, Maine, At 18 years of age, he joined the U.S. Navy "to see the world." He served during World War II and spent six years in the Pacific area. He first saw action in the Aleutian Islands in the north, then on to Hawaii and on to the south Pacific. During that time, he earned the rating of chief electricians mate. In his early years in the Navy, his best buddy invited him home for the weekend to Whittier, Calif., where he was introduced to Tally. Two years later, they were married on his 22nd birthday at Russell's home in Maine. Just after the war ended, Tally was able to join him in Hawaii for his final year at the Pearl Harbor Navy Base. They returned to Whittier and Russell went to work for General Telephone Co. He was transferred to Santa Monica and retired after 35 years with the company. He was a member of the Malibu Optimists' Club; he was a docent at the Adamson House in Malibu; and he was an Arson Watch member. He was also involved with Cub Scouts and Sea Scouts. Russell leaves three sons, Bill, Mark and Scott; two daughters-in-law; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
