EAST VASSALBORO -- Elizabeth "Betty" Taylor, 77, passed away peacefully at her home, Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010.

Betty was the daughter of Harold Cooper Taylor and Eula May (Philbrick) Taylor, born in Waterville on Nov. 27, 1932.

Betty attended schools in Vassalboro, Waterville High School and Westbrook College in Portland.

Betty worked as a legal secretary for several years for the firm of Dubord & Dubord, later Marden, Dubord, Bernier and Chandler in Waterville. She also worked for a few years for the firm of Marvin E. Levin, Esq. of Santa Monica, Calif. Later she became the librarian for Vassalboro Public Library where she served for more than 30 years.

Betty was a founding member and life member of the Vassalboro Historical Society and Maine Old Cemetery Association. She was also a member of the Vassalboro Library Association, Maine Historical Society, Maine Genealogical Society, Kennebec Historical Society, Taconnet Falls Chapter of the Maine Genealogical Society and the Rangeley Lakes Region Historical Society. Over the years she had been a member of several other cultural and historical societies.

Betty was particularly devoted to the cause of the Vassalboro Historical Society. In her lifetime she saw the collection grow dramatically. She worked at rebuilding the Vassalboro Public Library book collection after the library fire of 1979.

In years past, Betty spent many happy hours transcribing cemetery stones and also spent many happy hours doing genealogy. Betty got her interest in history from her father.

She is survived by several cousins, and a few close friends, and in the latter part of her life she enjoyed the company of a little stray dog by the name of Duke.

She was predeceased by her parents, Harold C. Taylor and Eula (Philbrick) Taylor.

A celebration of life will be held in October. A date has not yet been set.
