James appeared in the census on 22 June 1880 in Shiawassee Township, Shiawassee, Michigan. Age 57, born New York. His household included wife Eliza L., 54, and children Rudolph J., 24; Lillian L., 21; Nellie V., 21; and Georgia Anna, 19. Note: Both Rudolph and Georgia were marked as widowed, it is likely they were married and the enumerator marked the wrong box. Name on census: James S. Colby.

He appeared in the census on 16 June 1900 in Owosso, Shiawassee, Michigan. Age 77, born New York. His household included his 2nd wife Hariet L., 55. Name on census: James S. Colby.

He died in Oswego, Oswego, New York. He of whom we write was trained in the practical work of farm life, and
attended the district school when he could be spared from the farm. Being the
eldest son, he was his father's mainstay, and remained under the parental roof
until he had reached his twenty-second year. When he came to Michigan he made
his first home at Pinckney, Livingston County, and in 1884 established himself
there in the coopering business, and the last year of his residence in
Livingston County kept hotel.

Mr. Colby removed to Shiawassee County in 1854, and located on a farm six
miles south of Owosso, in the township of Shiawassee Here he devoted himself
to raising sheep, and in cultivating the more prominent cereals such as
wheat, oats and corn. His farm consisted of three hundred and twenty acres,
and he continued upon it until 1881, when he removed from the farm to
Owosso. He owns three farms which are operated by tenants.

James Singer COLBY and Eliza L. NELSON were married on 29 November 1843 in Oswego, Oswego, New York. Eliza L. NELSON²⁵⁸ was born in 1826 in Oswego, Oswego, New York. She died on 28 June 1893 at the age of 67 in Michigan.
