Joseph L. Philbrick, Sr. passed away September 28, 2002 in Fortuna at the age of 75. A native of Massachusetts and resident of Ferndale.

Joe, "Daddy", 'Dad", "Nonno", "Granddaddy". These were just a few of the affectionate names we all called him. He was a man with a love for God and family. On September 28, 2002, the day after his 75th birthday, and after a more than five-year struggle battling A.L.S. (Lou Gehrig's Disease), his body finally surrendered. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Wileeta; his son, Joe Jr. and his wife, Kathy; his daughters, Jeana, Kellie, and Karen, and their husbands, Andrea, Steve, and Joe K; as well as his 10 grandchildren: Sarah, Stephen, Carolina, Dylan, Lauryn, Thomas, Jory, KImberley, Gabriel, and Kevin. He also leaves behind two sisters, Lasca and Ruth and his half-sister, Jane, as well as many nieces, nephews, in laws, and dear friends.

Joe was born in Natick, Massachusetts in 1927. All of his life, he was a student and scholar of the Bible and studied at every opportunity. His strong faith never wavered during his long struggle with A.L.S knew God had a plan and he was willing to accept that plan. Not even in the hard times just before his death did he ever give up hope that God might relieve him of this disease.

He attended college at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Bible, as well as Master's and Doctorate degrees. It was at Baylor where he met his wife, Willeeta and started his family. He influenced many young people in his 35 years of teaching as a professor at California State Polytechnic University in Pomona, California, at Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas, and at California Seminary in Covina, California. He also held pastoral positions in Texas. He was a resident of the Ferndale area for 12 years, as Joe and Willeeta had chosen this beautiful area in which to retire. He never quit studying the Bible, translating and writing, which was a major part of his life.

We all dearly miss his laughter and happiness, but we know God is proud to have him join Him in His Heavenly Kingdom.
