GARDINER — Doris E. (Gallop) Philbrick, 97, of Mexico, died Sunday, Jan. 30.
Born in Mexico, on Sunday, July 13, 1902 she was the daughter of Julian and Elvena (Richards) Gallop. She was a graduate of Mexico High School with the class of 1920 and Bates College in 1924, majoring in languages. She also held a degree from Washington School of Art and attended New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.
She was employed as a language arts teacher and taught school in Salem, N.Y., in 1925; Rangeley in 1926 and substituted for many years in the Mexico, and other school systems. She also taught private music lessons in her home and played the organ for the Mexico Congregational Church for several years.
Her interests included drawing, music, flower gardening, local history, genealogy and writing poetry. In 1987, she and her friend Dorothy E. Safford published their poetry in the book, “Sunshine and Shadows: Poems of the Heart.” She continued to play the piano up until the time of her death. She was a member of the Poetry Club of Maine, the Androscoggin Chapter of the DAR, and attended Mexico Baptist Church and the Mexico Congregational Church. She was a former member of the Swift River Grange
She was married in Mexico, on June 22, 1930 to the late Harry L. Philbrick who died in Rumford on Oct. 31, 1983.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Kenneth (Grace Anna) Leeman of Orr’s Island, and North Port, Fla., and Mrs James (Faith) Schillinger of Richmond; two sons, Julian of Natick, Mass., and Clyde of Biloxi, Miss.; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by a son, Paul; two brothers, Myron and Richard Gallop; and a grandson, Andrew Schillinger.
