3421. Sylvanus Huntoon BEAN1460 was born on 29 June 1816 in Grafton County, New Hampshire.844,1461 He served in the US Army twice. First Enlistment: Enlisted for five years, by Lt. Merrill, in Albany, N.Y. on 10 August, 1839, in the First Dragoons, age 23, grey eyes, dark hair, fair complexion, 5 ft. 6-1/2 inches. Born Grafton County, N.H., 1816, occupation, painter.. Discharged 10 August 1844 at Ft. Washita, Indian Territory (Oklahoma), for expiration of service. Remarks: Dishonorable discharge, a Private. (There was a first court martial in June 1842.) Second Enlistment: Enlisted for five years by Lt. Mason at Ft. Gibson, OK, in First Dragoons, Co. H. Grey eyes, dark hair, fair skin, 5 ft. 7-1/2 inches, occupation, soldier. Discharged 1 Feb. 1848; sentenced by Court Martial at Ft. Gibson, discharged a Private. While at Ft. Gibson, Sylvanus Bean, together with Musician J. H. O'Brien, on 5 July 1844, refused to dig a latrine. O'Brien was beaten badly with a walking stick by Gen. William S. Harney and spent a week recovering in the infirmary; Sylvanus Bean was shackled with an iron ball and chain, and spiked collar and assigned 27 days of hard labor. Records have been found of two court martials in 1847, one in June and the other in August. Research ongoing to determine causes of court martials. During that time he married Mary Jane Grider and had a son, Sylvanus Monroe. In 1853/54, he moved to Wise County, TX, where he homesteaded and was a justice of the peace when the county was formed. Sylvanus Huntoon BEAN and Mary Jane GRIDER were married on 11 January 1850 in Lamar County, Texas.1461 Mary Jane GRIDER was born (date unknown). Sylvanus Huntoon BEAN-17173 and Mary Jane GRIDER-20207 had the following children: Sylvanus Huntoon BEAN and Sarah BIRDWELL were married on 3 April 1854 in Hopkins County, Texas.1461 Sarah BIRDWELL was born (date unknown).
